The MSD box topic got me started on this thread. There might be something wrong with my trans, but I'm not sure.
My rebuilt version of my engine with a smaller cam makes peak hp at 6100 instead of 5500 like the old cam, and the trans would shift at 5700-5800.
I bought a governor kit, and played with it until I got 6100 rpm-- but I guess just the 1-2 shift, I didn't think to test 2-3, and getting a full throttle 2-3 shift isn't something I have room to do around here.
I got to the track, and the engine just hung dead at 6350 rpm and wouldn't go any higher. What a way to learn-- drive 1.2 hours each way to find out somethings wrong.
I have a 6600 rpm MSD pill in the 6al. Its a hydraulic roller motor.
Do you think I'm just hitting a max rpm here? Or what is going on?
The trans is sort of flaky, sometimes when I just romp on the gas it just revs to the moon, and almost always I need to put in like 1/5 pint trans fluid and it clears up. But other times it does this just sometimes, and I check the fluid level, and its fine.. It really dosen't ever seem to need that much fluid to be doing what it does..
What sort of action should I take to see what is going on here?
Could there be something wrong with the trans that it won't shift up there? I put the stock springs/weights back in, and now it shifts a 5500 rpm and 5700 rpm 1-2, 2-3...

are you running a rev kit? Whats the spring pressures on the valves?

my hydroroller motor floated the valves at 6450 on the dyno. sounds about right.

No rev kit, but crane roller rockers w/ girdle, comp 928 springs, 149 @ 1.880, 371 @ 1.250. I just don't see why it is "taching out" like that at 6350, and not just over-reving then shifting into the next gear?

I have dynoed a bunch of both big & small block hyd roller engines & without exception they have died between 5800 & 6600.
The 6600 ones had a rev kit on them.
I have gotten some to pick up a few hundred by adjusting the valves at zero to +.002 hot.
Some of these engines "roll" off slower than others. By that I mean they rpm higher but the HP is heading south on a curve very fast.
Some flat look like they hit the rev limiter.
