I will be having my '70 ss painted in the near future. The color is fathom blue metallic. How do I order that original color and where do I get it from? Also, can I get a paint code for that color that describes what colors to mix in order to have a paint shop create fathom blue metallic? Thanks.

For our 1969 el Camino, they looked up the Cortez Silver code 69 and had the paint mixed. Being base-clear, it probably won't look exactly the same as the original paint as it wasn't base-clear. The cut and polished finish will do funny things with the sunlight reflecting off the car. The paint will look good but may look like a slightly different shade.

All you need to do is give the paint supply store 1970 GM Code 28, which is Fathom Blue metallic. They should have it in their computers and what tints are necessary to mix it properly.

Can you recommend any paint supply chain that I should use?

Im not going to use the base coat clear coat. If you order the acrylic lacquer will the color be closer to the same? Sorry for posting that on you're topic it just got me curious.

That's ok. I'm curious too. If going with the acrylic lacquer, will it last just as long if the car is kept in a pristine environment??? Also, again, where can I order either the base/clear or the lacquer?

Just go to your local autobody supply store or go to a reputable bodyshop and ask them to order it. My 1970 ss is also fathaom blue and my bodyshop took care of all that

Lacquer hasnt been used since the 60-70's and for good reason. Do yourself a favor and get some MODERN day urethane

Laquer is outdated, and chips easily. A single stage urethane will work....BUT....it's difficult to get the metallics in that color to flow out properly if you don't know what you are doing. Do yourself a favor and go base/clear. I used DuPont Chromabase and Chromaclear 7900S with a slow activator. There are no "paint supply chains" around my area, I just go to the local distributor to get it. However, since DuPont has been outlawed in NJ, I have to go to Maryland to get it.

If you want to get anal, as some of us do. I found the 1970 ppg formula for laqu.(autum gold) had them find a store that had some tints left, mixed me a pint. sprayed a test card ,then had it scaned at the paint store and a base coat formula made. Gary
