: HELP!!! Window Assembly '66 SS
kjett May 23rd, 07, 9:32 AM Hi,
I'm in the last stages of a frame-off restoration on my '66 SS. It's been almost two years since I took the car apart, and sadly I didn't take enough pictures to help me with the reassembly. I've got the factory assembly manual, Fisher Body manual, as well as the chassis manual for this car. That said, I can't seem to get the side glass back in the car! I have probably spent 15-20 hours fighting with it. I bought all new glass, all new felts and fuzzies. I got the vent windows completely rebuilt/installed on both sides. The part I'm struggling with is the rear window guide (sash channel) and the guide plate that goes in it. The felt weather stripping that I got (bought it from two different suppliers YO and John's Classics) doesn't seem like the right stuff. Below are a few pictures that I took of the rear run channel, weather stripping and guide plate. As you can see from the pictures the felt weather stripping is only about half the depth of the run channel itself. Is this how it's supposed to fit? Also, does the guide plate actually go "into" the felt molding? I've tried to force the guide plate into the felt and it seems nearly impossible. Last question, I can't remember which guide plate goes on the passenger/driver side. Does anyone know?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated :(
MikeMalibu May 23rd, 07, 9:58 AM The felt in that channel should be almost as thin as duct tape. It has a felt feel on one side and a binding on the other side and is about 2 1/2 inch wide. You can buy it by the foot at the local auto glass shop. Your middle pic shows a thick insert, which is your trouble. The felt tape should adhear to the sides and bottom of the channel to "cushion" the sliding of the plate. Hope that helps.

Yep that is correct .SB the thin stuff and I got an Auto glass shop to install my glass in the channels and I made sure they had the same stuff as original .........like you I have all the manuals etc but had a terrible time with the rear quarter windows .getting them in with the correct orientation of the mechanism and which guide plate went where !! ....... Sori cant recall the answer to your question on the guide plate ..I wanted to forget this whole part of the build ....... you pbly have lots of people here to set you straight but if really stuck call James Hinshaw he is very good with interior questions

Thanks, Mike. This confirms my suspicion. I was pretty sure I had the wrong weather stripping.

Hehe... Bill, you ain't kidding. This window stuff plain stinks! I only have one pair of guide plates. Am I understanding you to say that the guide plates actually go on the rear 1/4 glass windows instead of the side glass?
kjett May 23rd, 07, 1:08 PM Well, I called around to more than a half dozen auto glass shops in the area trying to find the weather stripping. I called Steele Rubber Products as I've had luck getting hard to find weather stripping through them before. They didn't carry the part, but they referred me to someone that did. The company is called Restoration Specialties:

The felt is called Mohair channel liner (they also call it cat whiskers). It sells for $2.50 per ft. I bought 10' of it just in case I every decide to do something like this again (not likely). Thanks again for the tips/advice guys.

Thanks, Bill. That would be great if you could snap a pic. I got the passenger side rear quarter glass installed tonight. Only took three hours  Oh well, at least it's progress.
