These are a couple blocks im considering to purchase if they dont get too high. Im especially interested because it's driving distance so I can save a couple hundred bucks on S&H/ Crate fee's.

For anyone who has chimmed in on my recent posts I want to build a 489 or 496. So these both look like really good runners, Im just wondering which if either would be better, one is .30 over already so it would still need a bore unless I kept it at .30 over IF NOT, then I should probably go with the standard bore do to it needing machine boring anyway. Cant decide. Maybe check them out and let me know what you guys think of them?
Thanks :D
Phil

Also, the value on them....
This build up is for alot of street driving, very very very little track use. Maybe once here or there.

Funny how the 2nd one has a 1973 casting date and he says its a 1982 LS7 crate motor

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for either one..I can get brand new GM 454 blocks for $800,but shipping would be expensive.

Make damn sure you can get out of the shipping costs. Most of these guys make their money on inflated shipping. It has happened to me once, where the guy was only 3 hours away, and he would not renogoiate the shipping charges.

That guy sells 454 blocks constantly or has been for the last 3-4 months. I've been watching for one myself. They almost never sell for less than 600-700. Seems reputable from what I've watched of his auctions but do not take that as a recommendation smile.gif His feedback is good.

Cool, good to know someones been watching him smile.gif The feedback is cool, and he seems like a nice guy that knows his blocks. He emailed me back with some other stuff he had, kind of pricey.

If I need machine work anyways on one of these blocks since I want to go .60 over, maybe i'd be better off getting a cheaper block? Im not sure what to purchase here....

I think maybe I am more interested in this one. I shouldnt buy his more costly block, the only BIG difference other than date codes which I dont care much about at this point is it has freeze plugs and its .30 over. But as I was saying I want to go closer to .60 over. So maybe this is the block for me! Thanks for all the help again, you guys rock tongue.gif

Looks like I could double my money if I decide not to keep it. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

How can you tell if it's not a "true 4 bolt" if its a converted. And if it is, whats the pros and cons of it? With there be some hokey looking welds on it or something?

Are you sure you want to spend that kind of money for a 4 bolt block if you're only going to use it on the street?? I dont know their availability there, but in my area, you can get 454 blocks for pretty cheap...I got my two bolt block for $150.00, and I could have had a 4 bolt for $275.00. If you not building an all out race engine, a two bolt 454 will easily handle 600 HP...Just my opinion, but I think I would put my money into other parts ;)

pnut,

the guys are right, you don't need a 4-bolt main block for a street car. Look for a 2-bolt locally, save yourself a bunch of money on shipping and stuff.
