: upgrades for 383 stroker
aschmid May 22nd, 07, 10:19 PM Hey y'all
Been having a blast with my new chevelle I picked up a month ago. It has a 383 stroker motor with a weiand blower, things got some serious power! I'm not much of a motorhead and still learning about it. The car has a stock HEI distributor and ignition. A buddy of mine recommended I get an MSD 6AL box. Would I also have to change the distributor with this box? Coil?
I've looked at these three parts - would this be a good combination of what I need to upgrade the ignition system?

Chief fat nutz May 23rd, 07, 12:02 AM OK,see my combo below in my signiture? Pretty simple and probobly the same almost just not a stroker.
Theres alot of questions I have for you so far. Do the best you can to find out and answer em' so we (the forum) can give you the best advice.
Best thing to do is find out what type of blower it is. Im ASSuming its a mini-blower then. Is it the small 142cid like what i have or is it the larger 177cid weiand blower? If you need help identifing whats what....just ask. That makes the world of difference believe it or not.
Good ignition system is good for performance reasons like what we want to do,but if its like say a truck motor,or mild car build up just wanting extra punch to 5000rpm then stock ignition is fine believe it or not. These little blowers only put out 4-6psi of boost with the provided pulley. Im running a Petronix Distributor and 8mm wires and a the coldest ACDelco plug I can get then gapped em' down to .030". Nothing major but you do want a good spark system and don't forget fuel delievery! A blower wants 10-25% more fuel regarless. It wants more fuel and it wants it faster. So to answer your question, yes it would be good to get what your friend suggested.
Also, find out the specs of the engine, cam, compression and heads, etc. Stock heads won't kill a 142 blower. The blower will suck air past those small ports easily.
Tom Mobley May 23rd, 07, 12:07 AM Andy,
fancy ignition stuff is the single most overhyped add-on that exists. If your HEI is in good shape and has the right advance curve none of that stuff will help much.
aschmid May 23rd, 07, 12:08 AM All I know is it's a weiand street blower. How can I tell what model it is? Right now, when I gun the gas, its not getting past 4-5 PSI of boost.
Unfortunately the guy I bought the car from doesn't know to much about the motor, except that it's a 383 stroker and that he noticed it had roller rockers.
I wish I knew more about the motor- supposedly the guy who had it built it put a lot of money into it. I assume there's no way to tell cam, compression, etc without pulling it out and tearing it apart?
aschmid May 23rd, 07, 12:12 AM well the guy said the main advantage of the 6al would be a rev limiter in case of a driveline failure. So all those addons wouldn't be a noticeable performance gain?

kindof hurts when he can't tell you what he built himself. Tells me he probobly didn't build it or a friend of a friend built it,who knows for sure but about that blower. 3 questions to help determine....
1. is it single or dual carb'd.
2. if its single carb'd,does the blower belt have a small 6 rib serpentine belt or a larger 10 rib serpentine belt?
3. Heres the tougher one,the blower housing is bolted to the lower manifold and has a certain number of bolts holding the blower to it. The smaller 142cid blower should have 4 bolts,1 at each corner of the blower holding it down to the lower manifold kindof like the way 4 bolts hold down a carburator.
The larger 177 has 6 studs on the lower manifold,3 on each side of the blower with nuts which hold the blower down to the manifold. The aren't big studs, should be pretty small and theres no big 4 bolts on the top like the smaller 142 blower. The blowers look similar in size and are hard to tell by looking at the size.
