This was my quarter mile run. The car had no spare or anything in the trunk and I ran it with the same tune as I had run the car in the 1/8th track one week before. I also used a 1" shorter tire (skinnier too) and skinnier tires up front and aluminium wheels all around (previously ran on rallys)

60 2.576
330 6.942
1/8 10.656
MPH 64.99
1000 13.966
1/4 16.781
MPH 80.01

This is the 1/8mi run with same tune but with spare in trunk on rally wheels and fatter rubber all around.

60 2.403
330 6.693
1/8 10.239
MPH 69.81

This is another 1/8 run with car in same trim but later that night. (best 1/8MPH)

60 2.438
330 6.744
1/8 10.264
MPH 70.23

Another 1/8 run earlier in the night and with 2 degrees less total timing.

60 2.578
330 7.046
1/8 10.696
MPH 68.25

This was my best ET run in the 1/8mi (4 degrees less total timing than my best MPH run)

60'- 2.162
330-6.590
1/8-10.176
mph-69.5

Enrique, your ET improvements will need to be realized in your 60 ft.
So,sticky tires and a higher than stock stall will get you there.
What secondary spring do you have in your 600? I'm wondering if your secondaries are opening all the way. With a 350,the purple spring from the kit has always worked best for me.
Also, you mention you have a q-jet intake with a sqaurebore Holley..I would ditch the intake, and get an RPM or at the very least a Peformer.

Ditch the 2.73 gearset and I'll bet you'll be alot happier with the timeslips!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/beers.gif

Well, i was hoping to get a Holley 300-36 intake. Mostly because if i grind off the Street Dominator and Holley castings and paint it orange, it will look a lot like a GM intake (it has the runners numbered just like GM intakes).

I'm using the brown spring in the 600. I'm not sure if a softer spring would help in the 1/4, but when i tried the plain spring in the 1/8, i couldnt run better than 10.4x times. The brown spring got me 10.17 but it was later in the night (cooler tems, etc) so i may try out a softer spring again.

I have a 25 inch tire available to me but it's only 215s, so i wonder if i'll spin them too easily. I'll try them next time out (August 19).

Stickier rubber will have to wait, i have to save up.

And i will be ditching the 2.73pegleg for a 3.55posi sometime in the next 6 months.

well on the 1/4 mile run did you shift into 3rd?

i would hope not.....1st and second gear is all you need with 2.73 gears......1st gear should carry you to almost to the 1/8th mile mark.

what is your shift point?

you should stick in the purple colored spring in the secondarys and go with that.....

are you setting your tire pressure for maximum tire patch contact?

even with a bone stock 305 sbc with 130,000 miles on it with a 2bbl carb i was turning 17.80's with 2.56 gears and was pulling down 2.40 60 ft times......in a 79 camaro that was 3800 lbs...

what fuel are you running......87 octane should be in the tank......

when i had another 79 camaro it had a bone stock everything on it (350 q-jet carb)even a/c with 2.41 gears it would turn 16.4 in the heat of the day and 15.9 in the evening time with cooler weather with the factory air cleaner lid fliped over.....lol..shifted at 5000 rpms out of 1st and carried the 2nd gear to finish line.

Enrique, you have wounded something on the car - you lost ~ 5 mph at the 1/8!

I too wonder if your secondaries are fully opening.

Silly question: is the fuel filter fresh?

As far as where to start I do not think it is a matter of upgrading your intake manifold, you need some more fundamental work first. Besides all the basics for a good tuneup you might want to verify compression and cylinder leakdown. If the foundation is not solid, then throwing performance parts is sure to disappoint.

Also, you may have simply gotten overly enthusiastic on manually shifting it way beyond the fat part of its powerband. Next time try shifting dramatically sooner, it may suprise you with quicker e.t.'s.

Okay guys here's some more info.

Fuel filter is fresh but is before the pump. A week before running at fontana i ran the 70MPH run with the same filter at Irwindale. Ran same filter daily driving also.

The car usually runs 10.60s at 65MPH at irwindale if the car is left in Drive and allowed to shift automatically. During the the 70MPH run I held the car in 1st more than 3/4s of the track.

What i think maybe have happened was I shifter early, at Irwindale i was shifting by ear. At Fontana I was getting shift-happy at only 4000RPM.

I will be doing a cylinder cranking compression test tomorrow or thursday.

I ran 91 octane at Fontana in anticipation of a hotter day. I run 89 at Irwindale. The car will run on 87 but from experience, the 87 octane is really nasty looking locally.

I will be going back to Irwindale in a week or two. I'm thinking of running the same tire/wheel combo as the 70MPH run to make sure the car is still capable. After that I'll try to get the car to run consistently with consistent timing curve for 36 total and stock fuel curve on the 600 with the brown spring. Once its relatively consistent, i'll mess with the timing and then fuel curve.
