: Wanting some more Power out of 5.7L
bluechevelless Feb 8th, 05, 11:26 PM I know its not chevelle.
I want to get some more power out of this 89 camaro IROC-Z with a 5.7L 350. Weve already rebuilt the engine, new tranny, new exhaust, and a Performance chip, but whats something for around $500 to get me 50 or more HP without NOS.
Oh yea weve got K&N filters too.
ZZ69chevelle Feb 9th, 05, 12:13 AM Port the heads, best bang for the buck going. Costs you for gaskets, grinding rolls, and time. Look at upgrading the intake too. TPI is pretty restrictive on a 350. Take some time to check out www.thirdgen.org (http://www.thirdgen.org) and you'll find tons of info on 3rd gens.
bluechevelless Feb 9th, 05, 12:31 AM yea I found that page couple of minutes ago.
I think we are going to do roller rockers as our next upgrade.
70mousejob Feb 9th, 05, 1:15 AM I wouldn't.... for the money there are far better bolt ons....you say it has new exhaust, what size? High flow cat? Headers? How about porting the manifold and a new set of runners, while its apart open up the plenum. SLP makes an awesome set of runners. I would do these before yankin the heads, but they wouldn't be to far out after this stuff, in addition to a cam swap. That is when I would worry about doing roller rockers. You aren't going to notice a difference with them IMHO. As was said, TPI is pretty restrictive, open it up, and definitely read up over at TGO.
thunderstruck507 Feb 9th, 05, 1:34 AM When you say you rebuilt the engine, did you do anything to it?
If not you can definately pick up power with an intake, headers, and such. Also as was mentioned, get the heads ported! Easy place to find most of the power you are looking for. If done right, you might be able to get as much as 20-30 HP
-SS454- Feb 9th, 05, 3:04 AM I think we should assume that after rebuilding the engine, he does not want to do a cam swap or pull the heads off. Same thing with the exhaust, brand new he is unlikely to consider changing it.
With that said, roller rockers are something you could go with. 1.6 roller rockers, if ur going to do it, dont waste ur money with just roller tip. This is assuming your camshaft isnt a new lumpy one. I agree with looking into a new intake. Though not power, you could look at gears. What gears are currently in it? Going from stock to 3.73s would feel like u picked up a bunch of power.
bluechevelless Feb 9th, 05, 8:38 AM We didnt rebuild the engine, we just bought the car not to long ago, actually my friend did and he wants to get some more power out of it with having to rip it all apart. I saw an Intake from ACCEL at jegs for about $410. I dont what cam, exhaust, and what else has been done to the engine.
thunderstruck507 Feb 9th, 05, 12:47 PM That is a lot of money for an intake. An edelbrock performer intake is less than half that. A performer is more than enough for an engine with anything near stock.
ZZ69chevelle Feb 9th, 05, 1:48 PM It's not a carb intake, it has tuned port injection. Buying an aftermarket base and runners won't be cheap.
thunderstruck507 Feb 9th, 05, 5:55 PM Oops, missed that...
If you're going to fork out the money for longer runners and possibly a better intake, such as a "Big Mouth" from TPIS, then your best bet is gathering ALL you money up and buying a complete Mini-ram system from TPIS. It's a lot better then paying nearly $400-$500 just for longer runners and another $400-$500 for another intake. According to TPIS, their Mini-ram system flows waaay better then staying with a stock "appearing" intake set up such as longer runner, ported plenum, aftermarket intake, etc. That WAS the way I was planing to go with my '91 Z28, but due to no money, I'm just going to rebuild it the way it was, then later on buy better heads, and the Mini-ram system from TPIS. I believe you did mention that you don't want to swap out cams, but, if you do, I'd highly recommend going with any of the "ZZ" series cams from TPIS. If memory serves me right, I believe they have a 350 (or 355 don't remember) that runs mid 11s with their set up. Not bad, and something I'd do if I had the funds. Good luck!
Edit: Just in case you'd like to check out the site www.tpis.com (http://www.tpis.com)
