: Building a 496 Cam ? Carb?
Rock68SS Oct 10th, 03, 8:51 PM Just picked up a 454 block. Intend on getting an Eagle stroker kit 4.250 stoke crank, 10:3 compression SRP's and H-beam 6.385 rods. Love the cube potential. I've been going to the track and afraid of breaking the numbers matching motor. 50 runs this year. Any way I already have Edelbrock rect. port 118cc heads, Weind X-celrator single plan or the GM dual plane, MSD 6AL, Hedman 2" full-length headers. Looking for carb and cam recommendations. Also it is 4 speed, 4:10 gear car at 3700 lbs. Would also like to keep it on pump gas for local cruise in's. Any advice or lesson's learned would be appreciated.

dukejoh Oct 10th, 03, 9:54 PM Be sure to get the SRP pistons with a dome to match the Edel chambers. The part number for .030 over is 212156 and .060 over is 212157. These are redesigned from part #'s 142990 & 142991 to fitthe Edelbrock heads. They have 1.270ch with a 18cc dome which = 10.2:1 with 118cc heads. Shop around on the balanced kit from eagle(you can find em for under 1700 balanced if you look).

Rock68SS Oct 10th, 03, 10:07 PM Thanks for the insight on the pistons. I have been shopping. $1750 to my front door on the kits so far. But need to make sure of the SRP part number. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
70ss496 Oct 10th, 03, 10:23 PM I've had my 496 together for about a month and a half now. I have a 950 HP on it that works well. I'm running a solid cam right now though, UD 288/296F7. It is a real responsive cam. No track info yet however. Hope this helps.

Rock68SS Oct 10th, 03, 10:40 PM Just looked at the SRP website. Did see the Edelbrock pistons but not the 212156 part number. Only higher compression. I'll give them a call Monday.
dukejoh Oct 10th, 03, 10:53 PM This is a new part number that I just got from JE/SRP this week. I am using holley heads and holley said there chamber is nearly identical to the Edel's and to use pistons to fit their domes. I haven't seen these numbers listed anywhere, but I did get a price from flatlanderracing of 499.00 on them. I am gonna see if my machinist can come close/match/beat this price to keep my business with him though. Good luck and I am also gonna get in touch with UDHarold at lunati when I get a little further along and I have heard no bad things about the 950HP either. smile.gif
fatmattbbc Oct 10th, 03, 11:36 PM Geez a 496 with 4.10's. I got to inmangine that would be hard to hook up. My 72 has a 496 with 049 large oval ports, stock size valves, a M-21, and only 3.08 gears and it is just smoke city on street tires. I was actually going to consider putting on a single plane intake to try to kill some of the bottom end. I LOVE FAT JUICY TORQUE!! graemlins/beers.gif
68chevelle533 Oct 11th, 03, 12:33 AM I would pick a cam with a duration at least in the 240s on the intake and 250s on the exhaust. Combine that with a good single plane and matching carb and you should be making enough power so that you should worry about the rest of your drivetrain. :D
Rock68SS Oct 11th, 03, 7:25 AM I'm not getting bad hook at the moment with my current suspension. Metco upper and lowers, KYB shocks, Energy Suspension bushings all the way around and ET Streets. I do come out 3800 to 4000 with some spin. But of course that is with current 396. I was planning on the c-clip eliminators so maybe while I'm in there drop the ratio down a little. ;)
Rock68SS Oct 17th, 03, 9:27 AM Trying to regenerate some feedback. I purchased the Eagle Stroker Kit. 4.25 stroke, 6.385 rods 10.3:1 pistons to put in the 454 block. I do have a Comp 294S cam and lifters that only has about 200 miles on it. 296 duration 595 lift. Thoughts on this cam? How about the carb recommendations 850, 950? Thoughts on HP's, Demon's and specialty built?
70ss496 I do have a line on a used 950HP. What is a good price? How is yours jetted. Was it matched to the combo. What heads do you have?
Thanks graemlins/thumbsup.gif
427L88 Oct 17th, 03, 10:48 AM That cam will probably work faily well since you have it sitting on the shelf. smile.gif Won't need the 4.10s eventually.
Rock68SS Oct 17th, 03, 11:34 AM Yea, unfortunetly it is 4 series Brute Strength carrier. Can only get to 3:90 unless I can get a decent swap. :(

This might help you out. We went through several cam choices.
70ss496 Oct 17th, 03, 10:06 PM I'm running the #206 ovals. They've got the smallest chamber out of any bbc head. It's got 2.19/1.88 valves, bowl blended, and port matched to the Victor Jr.
I bought my 950HP off of a fellow TCer, for $400. I got a really good deal. Its box stock and hasn't been used very much.
I've only had my motor together since Aug 11. The only thing it does at low idle I noticed at Street Nat's is that it will load up after idling about 30 minutes, I figure its kind of the nature of the beast. I haven't jacked with the carb yet, I will when I start going to the strip in March. It's got great street manners.
I have a temporary rearend under it right now with 4.10's and I'm not sure thats the way I will go now in my rearend I'm building. I live 12 miles outside of town and it makes it a pain to drive into town. I'm in the process of getting hardened axles, c-clip eliminators, and I might end up going with 3.55's. I'll just have to see. I love the quickness out of the hole with the 4.10's.
The only thing I would do different is that it has 11:1 pistons in it. So I've been running it on 110/92 octane 50/50 mix.\
I've got SS wheels on it right now(b/c I can't afford any for a couple months) with 26x9.50 Hoosier Quick Time Pro's. It doesn't hook up worth beans. I'll put a true slick on for the track with my new wheels. I've got a lot of stuff to work out.
It runs great, sorry this is so long I can't stop talking about it I'm so excited still, if you have any other questions just ask.
