: Best Plugs Around
RedSS454 May 14th, 04, 5:58 PM Howdy fellow TCers. How are you today?
Anyway, It is about time for the yearly tune-up and was wondering what you guys run for spark plugs? It's a street car, so it only sees 91-93 octane if that matters. Any reccomendations are appreciated. Also, what wires do you suggest that I could pick up at a Pep Boys/Autozone?
Thanks a lot,
Chris
We have to run Accel plugs just because they are short and will clear the headers.
Does Autozone even sell good wires?
Oh, are you running an HEI?
I'd say get some Taylor wires. They aren't dirt cheap, but they're pretty decent, and they aren't through the roof on prices either. You can order them through Summit or the like.
66chevyIISS May 14th, 04, 6:07 PM I use cheap $.99 Autolite plugs smile.gif

I don't know if they sell good wires, thats why I asked tongue.gif
Yup, I am running HEI, didn't think that mattered.
Thanks for all the responses, and keep em comin'.
Chris
Importtech May 14th, 04, 8:42 PM NGK...and I'll make you a deal on some good used not abused Taylor wires....email me if your interested...
Bob West May 14th, 04, 9:20 PM good ole AC Delco plugs graemlins/thumbsup.gif
427L88 May 14th, 04, 10:55 PM Yup, FR3LS if you need the gasketed long-reach. Autolites in a pinch, 3924. Think AC Rapidfires are a #5 in that config. Haven't tried them. That's next.
I'm sure NGKs are mint, for $40 a set!

40 $ A set ?? Just paid 12$ for a set of 8 NGK Race Plugs this week. Perfect for what I needed 5/8" hex, gasket seat, 3/4" reach.
... Anyways, I havent found any difference in any make of plug once the proper heat range was found.
kjett May 14th, 04, 11:27 PM Another vote for Autolites. I've ran their regular and AR series race plugs (kinda pricey). Never had any issues. Strong spark and love you long time :D
Bob Tiley May 15th, 04, 12:15 AM I run standard Autolite plugs and Moroso Blue Max Spiral Core wires. Both items are cheap and of great quality. I use them on everything.
mr 4 speed May 15th, 04, 6:06 AM All my big blocks use AC Delco plugs..for wires, standard HEI wires for a 1975 Suburban w/a 454 are fine.
Schurkey May 15th, 04, 1:01 PM Plugs: Anything EXCEPT Champion. (Champion being famous for having the most brittle porcelain in the industry.)
Wires: Anything with a helical (spiral) core and silicone jacket. DO NOT buy carbon-core OEM style, with or without the silicone cover.
427L88 May 15th, 04, 1:02 PM Oh, I'll get it wrong but it was NGK BCP4T or something like that, $5 a poop.
RedSS454 May 15th, 04, 1:30 PM Thanks for all the opinions. I went with the AC Delco R44T plugs, and decided to hold off on the wires for a little while. Thanks for all the opinions,
Chris

Wally Mart Sells Em In Fla , And They Work GREAT !!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
427L88 May 16th, 04, 8:13 AM Cool, the FR3LS are discontiunued but there's some stock still out there. The AC RF 5s are what they cross to. I wish WMart still sold AC oil filters up here.
Chris sorry to trample on your thread..the plugs I mentioned are extended reach and won;t work in your app. They're for alum and early cc heads.
Mike Feudo May 16th, 04, 3:39 PM What ever works for your combo. Despite what the books say plugs really don't crosreference perfectly.
Harold Sutton May 16th, 04, 6:17 PM We have had the best luck with Autolites. My friend with the Pro Stock Motorcycles used NGKs until he started breaking the tips off them. He did some reasearch and changed to Autolites and had no more problems even at 17-1 compression.
RedSS454 May 17th, 04, 10:59 AM we took out R44s plugs
when i asked the pros at pep boys for the 71 454 hi perf, plugs he said that it should have a TS plus (tapered sleve)
any one know what he is talking about?
Hmmm...I was thinking that TS meant tapered seat. I am no expert on BB stuff, but I do believe that a head as new as yours would use a tapered seat. I COULD BE WRONG THOUGH!!!!
I went and got some flat seat plugs for the Chevelle back when we were assembling the motor, and in some discussion here I was informed that I needed the TS plug.
The seat would basically be the nonthreaded part of the plug that fits up against the cylinder head. You know, the part where it basically bottoms against the head and finally enables you to give it the cinch to tighten it up.
Oh, and didn't mean to crack on you about the good plugs being found at Autozone. I was actually just trying to remember something out loud, sort of. I used to buy all my plugs and wires at the local auto parts store in high school, and was trying to remember if we got anything better than standard stuff there.
Oh, and I asked about HEI, because HEI will use an 8mm wire instead of a 7mm wire - or at least that was the case some years ago. Other than that, the difference is in the physical cable ends.
kboorman May 17th, 04, 5:16 PM Red, just a word of advice, NEVER trust the kid at the counter to get you the right part at the parts chain you last spoke of.... They don't hire experienced people, and they don't usually train them well either. Most of them don't know anything about the parts they're selling (example: TS). I know because I used to manage a parts dept and a shop for them, and I can't tell you how many customers we had complaining or how many techs had to redo a job due to incorrect/bad parts from there. The moral of the story here is to know the part number you want BEFORE going to the counter, and then double check that they've given you what you've asked for.
Not vendor bashing, just my .02, Kirk
mikehartwell May 17th, 04, 5:59 PM I was running NGK V-Power's, but just went to Autolites with the cut back ground. They're definitely burning cleaner than the NGK's. I run the shorties because of the angle heads and header clearance.
I've tried Taylor and MSD wires in the recent past. Just got a set of Accel Extreme 9000 high temp - love 'em. With the DEI insulators over the boots, these babies won't burn through. I'm gettin' tons of spark to the plugs now.
Suh-mokin! (tires, that is....)
Best,
Mike
pdq67 May 17th, 04, 6:35 PM Ditto the guy's that like the Blue Oval Autolite plugs b/c my SB's always seem to run better with them then the others.
But I only used stock type plugs way back when..
