: opinions on this solid cam
transam77transam Oct 19th, 04, 11:19 PM Im searching for a cam for my 406. It will be a 10.5:1 406 with edelbrock performer rpm heads and intake, 750 carb. This is with a TH-350 with a Art Carr 3000 stall. This is going in a fairly heavy car with 3.42 gears, I may upgrade to 3.73's.
Ive currently got a comp 274XE hyd. the specs are 274/286, 230/236 @ .050, .487/.490 lift, 110 lsa,
Now, Ive been thinking about this solid. the specs are 268/274, 238/244 @ .050, .497/.503 lift, 107 lsa. this will be installed straight up at a 107 too.
Do you think this solid will make much more power to justify the extra cost, keeping in mind I already got the hyd. cam and lifters. As far as the 3.42's, how much are they hurting me?
Thanks
67chevy2 Oct 19th, 04, 11:56 PM At 10.5-1 compression, despite the aluminum heads, I'd run a slightly bigger cam, with a wider lsa. I'd go for a solid in the 250 degree at .050" range(intake), and with a 110 degree lsa. The 107 lsa will kill your low end torque, especially in a fairly heavy car. The two cams mentioned are almost identical, except for the lsa. The wider lsa will help bleed off a little compression at lower speeds and would be more pump gas friendly. the narrow (107) lsa will give you a peaky power curve (4-6000 rpm) at the expense of low and mid-range torque. With 3000 stall and 3.42:1 gears, a big cube small block like yours can easily handle a larger cam, but keep the lsa near 110.
Hope this helps, Steve
sschevellefan Oct 19th, 04, 11:57 PM actually the solid cam is smaller than the hydo. cam. a solid cam with 230 duration @.050 is similar to a hydo. with 220 duration @.050. I don`t know the technical stuff about cams but I know that much. If your going to go solid, look for a cam with around 250-255 duration @.050 to work with your compression. Also, I`ve never used a comp cam but I`ve heard alot of bad things about them lately. Personally I like Schnider cams but Lunati cams are great too. I would run either before using a Comp cam. Hopefully someone will chim in and explain the difference in duration with solids and hydo cams.

I'm running a Lunati solid in my car now,I've run Mellings cams,Crane cams, Sig Erson cams with no problems. I've had a Lunati and Crane go flat in my sons 355,currently its a Comp cam w/Lunati Microlube lifters and its holding up. I've got a Comp billet solid roller on the shelf that will be going in my car for next year, if you listen to some on this site very much... I need to sell it now and not bother installing it :rolleyes:
Nothing wrong with a 107 lsa, builds cylinder pressure, which increases torque, and you need the peakiness for racing so the rpms will recover and accelerate quicker.
427L88 Oct 20th, 04, 9:22 AM Cam's too small for 10.5:1 with that LSa. Calculate the DCR and you find it to be around 8.5:1. You'll want 8:1-8.3:1 tops. This goes double for that XE274 grind.
sschevellefan Oct 20th, 04, 11:54 AM Rapid Robert, not trying to bash anyone, just passing on what I`ve hear from this forum. Alot of my friends have run Comp in the past but I`ve never heard any bad things about them till I came here. I`ve ran isky, erson and schnider cams with no problems with any of them. I`m sorry if I upset you, just passing on info I`ve heard.
pdq67 Oct 20th, 04, 7:48 PM How about a Z-27 Isky solid cam spec'ed at;
282/247, 108/?, .507" gross lift, (Isky recommends .018"/.018" lash)..
Should lower the DCR a schosh which should help the gas situation, imho.. And the cubes should handle it fine....
pdq67
AND don't forget duration at .050" is the same regardless of cam type, but lift may be different between a hy- and a solid cam....
And the solid cam's "actual" advertised duration WILL end up being what she lash's at!!!
transam77transam Oct 20th, 04, 8:45 PM As far as the gas quality, I can get 100 octane. I was gonna mix a couple gallons in per tank of 93 octane gas. I dont want to overcam this 400. I could go with a -13cc dish piston and come in right at 9.9 or 10:1 compression ratio if that would help.
