I have a 1972 SS454 Chevelle with the original build sheeet that says the car should be Midnight bronze . I have the car stripped down to bare metal and am considering changing the color to flame orange . Will this hurt the value of the car ? I'm not too crazy about the original color of midnight bronze but do not want to hurt the value of the car by changing to a non original color. I need help ! Does anybody have any input ?

I would keep it original.midnight bronze is very pretty when shiny.
I once owned a 72 ss 454 no console white bucket interior midnight bronze 4 speed car.

These chevelles were built for the young at heart, I was 31 years old when your Super Sport was setting in the showroom. They were beautifull then and still are today, you take a flaming orange Super Sport going down the freeway, you can associate the orange with mopars lime green and some of the other stand out colors, they are really something to see.

Paint that car the color you want, if they want numbers, tell them to buy it and get the sandpaper out, enjoy it for whats its worth to you at the moment.

Throw that buildsheet sheet in the filing cabinet, and get that orange paint out.:)

Changing the color of the car will not hurt the value by much. You have documentation for the car so dont worry about it, these cars are meant to drive and enjoy in my opinion, so paint it the color you always wanted and enjoy your chevelle.

I have a 72 ss and a 70 307 malibu , I enjoy both. The 70 is all stock the 72 however is not, it is built to my taste, thats what makes it mine.

Do whatever you want with your chevelle, it is yours!!! If you want to please the purists out there as well, then save every part you take off of your chevelle. Put it in storage and then if you ever decide to sell it you can say you have all the original parts for it. Charge accordingly!!!

Overall paint jobs are cheap, its the body work that cost you, so go for the color that suits you, if in the future you decide to sell it , you can always put it back to the original color , or negotiate the price accordingly.

Bottom line,

Enjoy your chevelle

Bob, I was in the same situation with my original 72SS. It is also a documented Canadian big block car that was also Midnight Bronze. I was hell bent on keeping it the original color, but changed my mind because I always planned on keeping it forever and just couldn't get myself to like the color. I even sprayed the truck lid just to see if I would change my mind once I saw a freshly painted panel in Midnight Bronze.

The bottom line was that if I really didn't like the color, how much would I like the finished product?

I ended up painting it Mulsanne Blue and I'm happy I did. :D

My 72 was the rare Carolina Blue, But I just couldn't drive a powder blue muscle car. Sorry to say, I sold out to red with black stripes.

In this case, any attractive factory hue will not de-value your Chevelle. The only way that might happen is if it was a very rare and valuable car, like a COPO or a low mileage car.

Go with Orange!
