Gents,

Daughter #1 came through! :hurray: 2x B-days, Army retirement present....

New Summit 3.42 12-bolt gearset on my doorstep this evening! :beers:
Catalog says "Quality" and "US Made", sure hope so! They came in a plain white box with white foam gear packing inside. Box had Summit stickie tag attached. One sheet of installation directions included! 42/12 gearcount 3.416.

Can't wait to have FRYNTYR install these bad boys SUN. New 3-series POSI and deluxe parts kit already on hand. This gearswap alone will considerably enhance the Elky's performance......2.56 to 3.42.....nice! Suppose mid 17s to 15s????
I'll add notes later about the install and how quiet/loud the gearset is.

I look fwd to BrettD85 posting right here that he acquired a bunch BBC parts.

Switched from M20 with 4.56 gears to Richmond 5 speed w/3.27 first gear and Richmond 3.55 rears.
New Denny's nitrous ready 3.5" driveshaft w/1350 joints balanced to 7000 rpm.
All new poly suspension bushings, Edelbrock adjustable uppers and anti hop bars.
Welded axle tubes, Moser Custom Alloy axles w/ c clip eliminators.

I put about 70 miles on this week just making sure everything felt good, sounded good, and was tight. These changes were all brought on when after breaking 2 muncies last year,.....in August leaving the line, the driver side axle tube spun in the housing, yarding the tire into the fenderwell lip. Luckily no damage to the body. Looked scary from where my wife was sitting, so I JUMPED RIGHT ON THAT, saying honey, see it needs all these things just to be safe.:D

See you guys Sunday!

I made the road trip to Smokey Point today and met Darryl "FRYNTYR". Being the kind and generous man that he is, he donated a pair of used 275x60x15 Drag Radials to my "Quest for Traction".
While I didn't have time to see the WHOLE collection I did get to check out the Chevelles and Novas.
Everywhere you turned there was something that created horsepower! :D
My car tip-toe'd out of his yard so as not to wake the slumbering beasts.
He was kind enough to fire up his '69 when it was safely chained down to his trailer.

BTW, Darryl I stopped by NAPA on the way home and picked up a pair of those coil spacers. I can't wait to see how much the tires and spacers help my next run. :D

Thanks again!

Greg (66 Buick Special),

FRYNTYR is da man! Gee! I coulda used those tires vs AHSOM. I think our kinda/sorta loose rules for the grudge race are "normal tire on the car" vs drag radials. Let me know how the tires work.

Greg, bring that fitting from that SBC Cyl head, ok?
I'll bring the spark em up plugs if ya want them.....maybe 1000 miles on em.

Loader1,

Nice info you posted! Breaking Muncies and spinning axle shafts, what fun!

Brett,

Think FRYNTYR's extensive inventory has been remarked upon by Greg.

Your welcome Greg, wish I had more than the 15-20 minutes to show you the wifes camaros and a little more detail on the BB collection. I was running tight on time to get my 69 chevelle to the photoshoot in Seattle. The photo crew loved the car and in their controlled environment it looked amazing.

Bonus: the models posing with my car loved my car too. I won't wash my car for a year now. The smell of perfume, race fuel, and burning rubber are the best.

Convterted the rear to UMI lower adjustable control arms, Eddy upper adjustables, with WolfeRaceCraft shperical bearings. Switched over to Bilstein shocks, and converted to 4 wheel disk brakes. Also did the Grand Cherokee swap, and installed my B&M Pro Stick.

Now I'm to poor to get the SC&C stage II kit, but I'm thinkin bout heating up the AMEX for that one.

what is the grand cherokee swap?

Switching the steering gear from the old, loose stock one, to the newer fast ratio steering gear.

Go search in the "PRO TOURING" forum, for GC swap. It's a very informative thread.

Also, I'm sorry I never got back to you on that PM, it got deleted when I was cleaning up, and I forgot to get back to you. I remember something about your 1/4's, send me another PM, and I'll try to answer your ?.

I feel like I should be buying new stuff too. The only thing I got is new rubber all the way around. The new MT Sportsman S/R's do look pretty tough. Other then that, does a new fan belt matter...

Gents,

Shortly I'll start loading the El Camino for tomorrow morning's trek north.

Is anyone interested in BUYING or TRADING FOR my spare 68-72 A-Body 12-bolt? If you're gonna BUILD A REAL HD/race unit, this would be a good starter as it needs new axles and bearing ends/c-clip eliminator kit. Why tear into a good one you paid a lotta bucks for, just build this one.
Has non-posi and 2.73 gears

FRYNTYR gets 1st shot at it.....by end of day tomorrow there will be a 2-series POSI and 2.56 gears ....BONNEVILLE anyone?

I did however stop by Bens and got a chance to check out the ahsum Elky that's now residing in his garage.

I did drop of the fitting you need with Ben and he said he would see you there.

I hope the weather co-operates with you guys tomorrow!

Gents,

The gearset has been installed. I can't wait to smoke em. Really hard to do previously with 2.56s. With the new gearset there seems to be quite a bit more oooomph than I expected.....always a good thing. I'll give the new diff parts til this weekend to wear in/heat cool. Roughly 90 miles of the break-in already completed last PM between the test jaunt then the run south to the house.

What's next?
I got HD rods, the Hyper-E pistons and rings from Darryl. Gotta go over the crank, still looks like polish only. Will ensure I have all the bolt-on and add-on stuff for the balancing. Bearings would be a good thing.... Would also like to fit the block and rings before balancing.... Bud's is closest, I-5 and Bridgeport. Cope Bros is not much further down the road, I-512 toward Puyallup 2 exits to Pacific. I've been pleased with their work 2x now. Also PED on River Road....

Cams, still looking hard at the El Cheapo GMPP grind Summit sels for less than $80. Naturally some other good grinds are out there. Will be watching closely what you discuss with Brett.

Hads...my old 063s still #1 candidate. V low mile on a Cope V-J in 1993. We're talking 2000 mile top. Big Comp Cams springs. Believe I'm clearanced to .550 lift.... Considering others but not in the minimal cost section of the cook book. Will most likely pocket port these paying careful attn to the short side radius.....with the pistons from Darryl, should be right in the 10.5--10.6:1 range. Little to be gained I feel in putting big valves into these.

Perf RPM A-G and the vintage 3310 will live again.

I scored that Summit/GMPP/Crane .540/.540" 228/238* cam,
new in box, $35
This is the cam Chevy should have put in their BBCs....
If you are a spec freak, it is a bit bigger than the factory street mechanical cam.
I bet it is all done by 5700--5800 rpm. I understand the cam to be in the 'torque god' category:yes:

Also scored another set of 781s, I love Craigslist

Can't beat that price, as I said in our PM, that more modest cam will match your more modest style of driving. :boring: Sounds like it will be a good street cam and a nice match for the rest of the equipment you have paired in for the build(ie. stock heads, lower comp). Good luck with the wifey.

And with the pounds you'll shed running from the wife and not being able to afford chow after all these parts, you'll lower your blood pressure and pick up a couple of tenths at the same time, a twofer:hurray:

How about Upper and lower Rear Control arms with new Poly bushings- FREE$$$ (thanks Dave)

Actaully, they are only on loan as i want to rebuild mine with new Rubber, but still :)

Now if i can just get those darn housing bushings out- i'll be golden.

Ben, I have access to a nice press if you need. If they are a real pain we could take them to my buddy at the machine shop.

Ben, I have access to a nice press if you need. If they are a real pain we could take them to my buddy at the machine shop.

I've got a couple sources for pressing the ones into & out of the arms, but the housing bushings i'm pretty much stuck with fighting them under the car as i'm not going to take the whole diff housing out.

Not looking terribly likely for me to have my new rubber bushings pressed into my uppers, and housing- and back on the car by friday night- but we'll see what kind of magic I can work up....

I got a new DriveShaft loop.:D

Ben, I've had to weld a piece of stock onto them before, to keep the arm from deforming. If the bushing is really stuck, they can spread during removal, or compress during installation. By tacking a piece of something, it will hold the arm in place, and make the bushing easier to remove.
