I have a 71 Elco. Had to replace the front pads. While doing, saw the hoses were bad so I replaced. I went to bleed the brakes, manualy, with someone pushing the pedal. I had the valve on the porportion valve pushed open. Most of the time, when the pedal was pushed, and I open the bleeder, no fluid, and some time it did. Some times, the pedal would not move, and after I closed the bleeder, the pedal would move. I also tryed bleeding with my vac pump, still not the best brakes. The MC is new, and Vac booster new, and now pads and hoses, and one brake line. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the porportion valve? Any way to check it out? I have never had the best brakes on this car since I bought it, maybe I'm looking for something thats not there? This is my daily driver, so I really need good brakes,I have two Olds 70 years, and the brakes are better on them. Any ideas? Thanks

If the M/C is new and you didn't bench bleed it first, i would start there. If the M/C was blead, Connect a hose to one bleeder at a time into a jar of brake fluid. Open the bleeder 3/4 turn and slowly pump the pedal untill no more air comes out. (Keep an eye on the fluid level). Go around to all the bleeders one at a time, starting with the furthest one from the M/C. I have found this is the best way when doing it by yourself. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I had good brakes, before, which is when I replaced the MC, and booster. I did bench bleed the MC, and worked good. THe problem that I had when I replaced the hoses and line, is when I had trouble bleeding. At this point I don't think I should have to bench bleed the MC again,or i'm I wrong? I still would like someone to tell me how to tell if the porpation valve is working correct? Thanks
