I have never built a 383 before so if this is dumb question dont be mad
I was talking to some people today at the parts store and they said I would have to order special heads made for a 383 so the piston didn't hit the valves isw that true

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT PERSONS HELP!!!!! the heads have nothing to do with piston to valve clearance, The camshaft lift and duration effect p/v clearance. Most typical street performance cams will have plenty of p/v clearance. you will be ok with any sbc head you choose, but check p/v clearance anyway. Not to be rude but you may want a shop to build your 383,it sounds like you are new to engine building.
good luck ,and read all the threads you can ,lots of experience her!

Fred, any qustions you have ask them here first from now on. There is way more knowledge here than any part store.
Like Jason said, the piston's hitting the valves has nothing to do with the heads you choose any small block head will work on your 383.

Fred,
I just built my first 383 and reused my heads that were on my 350. That person does not know anything about engines.
