Hey all....
Just finished the break-in last night. Sounded fantastic at 2 grand. Broke in on the outers only so I still have to swap in the inner springs before going for a spin.
Did let it idle for about a minute after the break-in was complete. It was sweeeeet! :D
Definitely a different sound than the old RPM cam.
Harold - if you read this - I did go ahead and get the offset bushing and dial it in on a 104º ICL. Wanted to put the cam in the way you intended it to go in even though you said it would probably only make a 5HP diff. I haven't installed the new fuel line and Carter 172 pump but I have it in my posession and will soon.
My kids both play hockey the next two nights so I will not get a chance to swap the springs around until Wed night. Will keep everyone informed about the progress......

When are you going to get it to the track? I am curious to see what it will run now with your cam swap. And then another run with the new fuel line and pump. could you post the spec difference between the two cams for us?
by the way -- nice ride!

Not sure when I can get to the track. I'm crewing this weekend for a T/D car at Super Chevy in Bradenton. The next few weekends I'll be attending hockey tournaments with the kids so it will probably be early April. :(
I will give the feedback as soon as I can though. The first installment will be the "seat of the pants" opinion. Stay tuned....
BTW - Thanks for the compliment. I know it's red with black stripes (supposedly the hated combo) but I like it and wouldn't change for anyone.

So, what is the best way to swap the springs with the heads on the car? Using compressed air in each cylinder with both valves closed?

loosend: Yup, that's the ticket. Get a leakdown test kit from Summit and change springs at the same time! :D

That's one way. My Compression tester has a quick disconnect at the guage that I plugged into the air line. Viola! - A rubber hose with the spark plug threads on one end and the air fitting on the other. It doesn't really need to be regulated but I added a small brass valve with a quick disconnect at the end of the airline to turn the air on and off.

nice cam break in. at least you got your engine running. FedEx managed to "break-in" my UD cam.
I need to e-mail you if that's ok about installing/degreeing the SB version of the UD 276/284 soon to arrive. Thanks and congrats.

Troy, you'll have to rewrite that sig to say 12.25 OR BETTER!
Guys, I used some pieces of ignition wire I had. Brought the piston up, fed the wire through the plug hole, and then mvoed the piston to TDC, or close. Very simple, only two problems. 1.) sometimes the wire would get wedged in there and need some persuading coming back out and 2.) often one of the valves wouldn't be completely seated and fall a bit. THe PC seals held them up fine though.
I've done it both ways, and I think the cord/wire way is simpler and easier. Oh, I don't have a good compressor at home so I had to use the wire method the second time by default. Yet, I still prefer it. I now carry the compressor tool, wire, and a few spare springs in the trunk,just-in-case!

Steve - I'd be happy to help. Drop me a line if you need to.
Gene - I hope you are right. Actually with the slicks, and the cam- I'm hoping for high 11's. Who knows - I'm having a blast either way.
The air thing worked like a champ. It didn't run the compressor (15 year old Sears 5HP/20Gal) much either.
