im just about to throw the towel in on the fouling plugs every 5 miles. going to upgrade the ignition sustem and see if that dosent clean the plugs up. also i see MSD makes a coil for the digital 6. would this be the coil of choice for this piece. what are your oppinions on these 2 units. thanks Dave

Perhaps your plugs are too cold?

A stronger ignition system won't keep your plugs from fouling, but will keep them firing longer as the hotter spark will jump through more junk on the plugs. It won't solve your problem, only help treat the symptoms of another problem.

You need to find the real source of your problem.

I'd say you are either too rich or your plugs are too cold. I ran that same exact cam in my Chevelle when it was naturally aspirated, and I drove it daily, about 40 miles a day. My combo was a little different (down about 1 on compression, 30 less cubes, and different heads) but it's still similar.

I never had a problem fouling plugs, although my corner plugs (1,7,2,8) ran richer than the middle plugs because of my Dart single plane, which is basically a Super Victor which you run. Check your plugs. Do all the corner plugs look a lot sootier than your inner plugs? I ended up running plugs 3 heat ranges hotter in the corners to keep them clean. That manifold just plain sucked for street driving. I switched to a dual plane (RPM air-gap) and was MUCH happier.

Care to take a picture of a few of your plugs? That might help identify your problem. Also, what plugs are you currently running?

FWIW, I ran and still run a 6AL + HVC coil + 8.5mm wires for my ignition setup.

Thanks Troy. i dont know if you saw my other post but my corner plugs go really quik. im sorta thinking it might be a fuel distribution problem. if this is the problem, jetting would be impossible. for plugs im using ngk R5671A-8. i went to auto zone yesterday to try and get a different plug but they werent any help. any ideas here? an A/C plug in maybe a 44. any part #s for a 3/4 reach plug with a protected tip? thanks Dave

Try the Fr3LS AC plug this is the same heat range that you seek and style. If there is a closer 44 type number I have not figured it out yet so let me know if you find something. FYI this is the number that Dart reccomends for their heads.

FWIW, I was running AC FR2LS in the centers and FR5LS in the corners when I was still running nauturally aspirated with the single plane.

If I thrashed on the car, all the plugs would look good, but after any amount of street driving the corners started to look grungy. Again, switching to a dual plane took care of my plug problems, and also gave me a LOT more response/torque below 3000rpm.

the digital 6 is on the way guys. should be here friday. the duel plane intake is an option, however, it will be to try and clean up the four corner plugs. im having trouble handling the low in tq i got now. not really sure i need or want anymore of that at this point. thanks guys Dave

If you don't want to go dual plane, you may also want to consider a Victor Junior. I have a friend running one successfully on his 377" in a '66 Chevelle, it doesn't seem to suffer from the "rich corner syndrome" that the super victor does. I think what it boils down to is that the super victor is just WAY too big for any amount of street driving; my guess is the runner sizes and plenum volume are too big for adequate mixture velocity at lower RPMs-- not a problem on a race only car, but a definate issue for a motor that sees street driving.
