I just replaced my valve covers on my 454 and used some 5/16" Napa cork gaskets. Good quality and thick as well.

I like the black neoprene? Felpro gaskets, seem to hold up a little better than the cork gaskets.

I used the same Mr Gasket cork gaskets for 10 years of everyday driving with a solid lifter cam in my last 327... my current solid lifter BBC has them also.

I use alum valve covers and use Permatex Hi Tack.. that brush on stringy red stuff and glue the gaskets to the valve cover... when they are set up I then take and apply a thin layer of stiff wheel bearing grease to the side of the gasket that seals against the cyl head. This will do a couple things...1st it keeps the gasket from drying out , 2nd it creates a sort of hyd seal and 3rd it keeps the gaskets from sticking or tearing when you remove the covers to lash your valves. When you have relashed your valve just clean your covers and reapply a new thin layer of wheel bearing grease to the gaskets and you are good to go.Doing this I have never ever had a leak , tear or any kind of gasket problem.... Sounds crazy but works perfectly.

If you remove the valve covers frequently, try the Victor-Reinz #VS50169. These are the OEM valve covers for 1986-2000 GM trucks with 454 engine. Silicone material, with a steel "backbone", they are somewhat pricey but they can be removed easily and they will last almost forever.
