: dealer installed rears
wannarun70 May 16th, 07, 10:58 PM i was reading through the CHEVELLE SS RESTORATION GUIDE book and got the rear end section. for 1970 it lists the 4.10 rear as being dealer installed. does all that mean is that you had to order it from to dealer to get it? and is what thier saying correct? thanks
Don_Lightfoot May 16th, 07, 11:38 PM Just one of the many errors from that book

Need to emphasize MANY just a little bit more.
mmurphy77 May 16th, 07, 11:58 PM I think that ratio was only available with the LS6 though wasn't it or could it be ordered on anything?
wannarun70 May 17th, 07, 12:07 AM so what you guys mean is that there is not a dealer installed rear except for maybe for a warranty replacement and would that have a special stamping on it?? SO WHAT BOOKS OUT THERE ARE GOOD IF ANY??????????
DaleM May 17th, 07, 12:42 AM I think what Don means is the 4.10 was a factory installed rear under RPO GW8, at least on 454s. I've seen it on numerous build sheets and Protect-O-Plate warranty cards for 70 models. Since these items were produced at the factory, I doubt if they built the car without a rear end gear and then shipped the gear in the trunk for the dealer to install. BTW, id codes for the 4.10 are CKK and CRW is listed for Heavy Duty.
If the factory somehow had the correct info on the build sheet and the P-O-P and still shipped the cars to the dealers with some other gear installed and expected the dealer to not only install the 4.10 gear set (w/mandatory Positraction) and still have the correct axle housing date on the P-O-P and the housing itself, then Chevrolet dealers went through quite a bit when the factory could install the correct rear to start with. Maybe it could happen that way - but I seriously doubt it.
It's possible the 4.10 could only be ordered with the LS6, not that much into 70s but all the sheets and P-O-Ps I have with the 4.10 are LS6s with both M22 or M40 transmission and are coded as CRW or CW on the P-O-P. Since there is a CKK code as well that's not specified as Heavy Duty, maybe the L34 and LS5 could get that - just haven't seen one.
Are there any books out there that are any good? Haven't found one yet that doesn't have errors but I haven't bought everything yet either. :noway:
elcamino May 17th, 07, 7:25 AM According to the 1970 order guide, the 4.10 was only available when the LS6 option was ordered and only in posi. In other words, not avialble with any other engine combo in 1970. If you wanted the 4.10 ratio in another car, the dealer would have to order the ring and pinion thru parts and install it for you. It would not carry a Chevy warranty in that case.
Here what the order guide says:
Axle ratios
Performance ratio.
Available only when 450hp engine and positraction axle are ordered. Includes HD radiator.....................ZQ9.............MSRP. .$25.85
Trailering ratio.
Available only when special suspension and Turbo-Hydramtic transmission are ordered
The 4.56 ratio Posi was a dealer only installed ratio. Meaning they did not install it on the assembly line.
EdCarpenter May 17th, 07, 11:31 AM As a note, my 70 L78 (3rd week of Nov. 69) has the KK code on the buildsheet and the CKK coded housing.
DaleM May 17th, 07, 11:48 AM As a note, my 70 L78 (3rd week of Nov. 69) has the KK code on the buildsheet and the CKK coded housing. On the build sheet, what's the RPO code for the 4.10? On the 454 sheets I have it's coded GW8 and that's for the heavy duty CRW version.
I know 3.31s are coded differently on build sheets depending on version (engine) and I suspect the 4.10 may be as well.
elcamino May 17th, 07, 3:07 PM The L78 was discontinued in early 1970 production run and the LS6 replaced it as the Hi-Perf engine.
animal69 May 17th, 07, 5:58 PM I found years ago that if you knew the RPO numbers you could order it! Just because it wasn't in the order guide didn't mean it couldn't be ordered. Heck my dealer couldn't locate the L78 and L89 options for my '69 Camaro but I got one!

Dale,
I have a limited amount of the buildsheet for my car. The majority of the bottom section is gone. The Vin is clear. The buildsheet came from my gas tank and was assembled one day after the buildsheet you have in your chevelle stuff, the Baltimore L78 #122042 vin.
I can send you a photo.

Sadly that's where the option code would be :( But, it would be cool to have another L78 sheet built the following day. My email is available in my profile, click my name and select Send email to Dale McIntosh
Jim Mac May 19th, 07, 12:41 AM this is just what I was told, Back in 78 before we bought my camaro, a guy was selling a 375 horse 70 chevelle. car had a muncie m 22 in it. the guy told me it was originally a 410 posi, but they switched it to 373s for a little better gas mileage. remember this is when gas prices shot up to around 75 cents a gallon. Guy I knew in high school bought it. and proceeded to flip it on its lid about a year after buying it. Jim
elcamino May 19th, 07, 10:04 AM Due to the high gas prices back then, performance cars sales dropped big time. I had a 70 SS 454 and got rid it because of the 10mpg and the high insurance. Back then gas tripled. Gas would have to go to $6/gal to reached the same level today. And back then, there were lines just to get gas and you could only buy on certain days in some areas (rationing).
@#$%^& OPEC was the reason and they are still screwing us to this day.
