As a newbie I am trying to determine if a '68 SS Chevelle that I am thinking about buying is a numbers matching vehicle. Using information from this site I have decoded the VIN (138378-A114014) but am having trouble with the engine ID (T0803IG249112). Can anyone help? Is it possible to hire a Chevelle authority to come to my location and authenticate. Thanks.

Welcome.
IG = 1965 - 1968 396/325 w/powerglide assembled Aug. 3rd.
I'm not sure about the 249112. Is it directly next to the T0803IG stamp?
Get the casting number and date from the back of the block and post that also.

IG is from a big car also, not a Chevelle engine.

Hey drdave thanks for the quick reply. I will need to double check the 249112. I was wondering if that is supposed to be the sequential production number for the block and is it supposed to match the sequential build number for the VIN. Anyway I will post up what I find.

Sorry I made my last post before I saw Dean's post. So it's safe to say it is not the original engine?

The second set of numbers posted after the Assembly date and suffix (T0803IG) should be the Vin number of the car. 249112 should be in slightly smaller font than the assembly date and suffix, is stamped to the right of the assembly date and Suffix and must match the last digits of the VIN of the car.
The assembly date of the motor T0803IG (08/03) also must preceed the build date of the car which is shown on the cowl tag (although it sounds like the IG suffix and VIN stamp already knocks you out of the ballpark)
Further though, is the casting date on the rear flange of the block which must preceed the assembly date on the block (08/03) and the build date of the car (shown on the cowl tag on the firewall)

Is there a letter on front of the 249112? That would show the assembly plant of the car the engine was out of. Its not G.

Does the engine pad actually read T0803IG Y249112 and the casting number should be 3855961.

Okay thanks for all the replies. I just needed to know if it was a matching number car which I am going to say it is not. The car is what I want and assuming it is perfect in every other way (paint, body, mechanicals, etc.) could someone ball park me a figure that I should use to de-value because it is not a matching #'s car. $5K?
