: CAM Selection (UDHarold)
BruteSBC Sep 19th, 04, 9:04 PM i am planning on building a 355 this winter, and i really need some cam help here.
i want 4.10s in the back, a TH350 trans, 355, 5.7 rods, forged pistons.
now i can go with the edelbrock power package that says ill get 420 HP. id like that, but i wanna see if i can get alittle more. i talked to harold a long time ago, and he said the 257/267 @.050 would be a good cam for me. anyone have this cam? if so, whats the rest of your combo? im really having trouble deciding on a cam for this application, id like to know what you have and what youve heard and what you like and dont like, everything
i really wanna be putting around 350 to the wheels, and any recommendations for heads and cam combo would be awesome, also, an intake manifold, i was thinking of the Air Gap, but will there be that much difference between me having that and a regular RPM or something? my goal is to have mid 12s in a 3800 LB car. any advise is great.

UDHarold Sep 19th, 04, 11:48 PM Mike,
What CR and cylinder heads are you planning on using? If the CR is about 10.5:1 or slightly higher, and the cylinder head ports about 195-210cc, the 292/301F10 will work just fine. I forget the Lunati part number, but this cam is 292/301 at .020, 259/267 at .050, .551"/.551" valve lift, and 110 LSA. In 12.5:1 engines on conservative dynos, it makes in excess of 525 BHP at 7000.
If you can wait until after the 1st week in December, there might be something even better come along.......

BruteSBC Sep 20th, 04, 12:03 AM well harold, i can def. wait for it if you tell me to wait for it. i wanna run about 10.0-10.5. i suppose with a 64 cc chamber that id have to do some deck or mill work right? i was thinking about maybe using vortec heads, but iunno if that will fly, do you think they would? or do i just need a 195-210 cc head, any one will do?
thanks so much, ive tried calling for awhile, but i know your really busy and my grandpa said the best way to reach you would be on here, we talked awhile ago after you first started working for lunati. any other advise would be AWESOME
thanks
mike
(i also have some friends that would like some cams from you. one for a ford and one for a stroker, when should i talk to you about them?)
UDHarold Sep 20th, 04, 10:34 AM Mike,
I haven't been to my office in over 5 or 6 weeks. It's been so long I've even forgotten how long it has been. I've been up in Bowling Green for all that time, so I'm not avoiding anyone, I'm just extremely busy with all the 'corporate' stuff. I'm having to learn all new software for planning my time on projects---I miss the old times when I designed a cam and handed the printout to Mike, and said--"Make It...". I try to answer what E-mails I can, send them to
haroldbrookshire@holley.com
This weekend I finally fixed my wife's Camry. I had replaced the starter 4 times---I can do it now in about an hour....
For the heads, Vortecs are OK,and we can definitely get 450 REAL BHP out of them, not the overblown advertised type. With my 290/300F8 in a 355, 10.8:1, with Vortecs, we had a 35 ftlb torque variation from 3500 to 6000, with about 454 BHP at 6200.
This cam is 257/266 at .050, .525/.525 gross valve lift, and 108 LSA. It is one of my favorites for the Vortec head.
If you want to run gross valve lifts in the .550-.590 range(1.5-1.6 rockers), then any of the cylinder heads in the 195-210CC runner volume are OK.
I understand that the high valve lifts cause turbulence in the Vortec heads.
Working at Holley sure is great----I have a LS1 Camaro to drive right now back-n-forth from home(about 335 miles each way) and during the week at work. I just have to conceal the NO2 bottle in the trunk well from the Highway Patrol. Of course the label across the windshield doesn't help......
