: Roller cam break in...is it needed?

Is it necessary to do the regular 2000rpm 20 min cam break in with a roller cam? I've heard that you don't need to due to the roller lifters. Is that true?

If I don't need to do the regular cam break in procedure, then how should I break in my fresh engine? Just follow everything else and not worry about the cam part?

Umm, start it up and set the timing and idle!

No break in of the cam with roller cams. All you need to do is as gene said...adjust the valves, fire it up, set the timing, and take it for a drive. Drive for so many miles like any other break-in period and change the oil/filter. The only item that really needs breaking-in is to get the rings to seat which with proper machinging should happen pretty quickly.

when I bought my roller from Crower, the guy said fire it up set the valves & have a good time! of course you do have to let the rings seat, but you get the idea.

Sounds good! One less thing to worry about! I plan on doing a bunch of varying speed runs to set the rings. GM's break in states to do part throttle runs up to 5000 rpm and then coast back down and then do it another 4 times. Is that to high of rpm for a fresh motor? Is it really necessary to do it that drastically?

I was told by an engine builder once (I don't know if there is any truth to this), but he said it's a good practice to "break in" your valve springs.

He told me start the engine and get it up to operating temperature for about 10-15 minutes, then shut down the motor and let it cool down completely (over night). Then start it up again to operating temp for another 10-15 minutes, then cool down. He said do this about 3 times. He told me that it will make the springs "last longer" which when using a roller cam helps because of how hard roller cams can be on valve springs.

I don't know if there is anything to this, does anybody have any comments/input on this procedure?

Broke mine in on the dyno...
Fired it up, set the timing and adjusted the carb. Let it run for maybe 10 minutes tops at various rpm's.
Shut it down and went to lunch. :D
After lunch, changed the oil and then made a dozen dyno pulls .

Having our new 502 ramjet done on the dyno as well. This way I can be SURE its done properly.
We also get a dyno chart which is cool to display at the shows. Few things are as comforting as KNOWING how much power you are really making, not just guessing based on your combo.
