I have a 71 Chevelle with an L6 250 Engine. I put in a Pertronix Ignitor electronic module in months ago. I was having no problem at all but now it seems that I get there is a great deal of black soot deposits in my air cleaner and the breather element from the valve cover. I replace them but they just get clogged quickly. This used to not happen. Of course when the aircleaner gets clogged the engine sputters really bad from not enough air. Also I just moved to California a number of months ago. I don't think that any additives that might be in the fuel would have anything to do with it.

Anybody might know what would cause the engine to blacken the air cleaner. It doesn't seem like I burn hardly any oil out, but it seemed like my oil got dirty much faster this last oil change.

Thanks!!

I would suggest pulling the valve cover to check for sludged-up oil return holes and install a new PCV valve while you're at it.
