Do all Chevelle engines require regular valve adjustments? I had a 67 Malibu with a 283 and don't recall ever adjusting the valves. Thanks in advance.

Only mechanical (solid) lifter high HP engines require periodical valve lash adjustment.

Can any engine have solid lifters? What would a person look for to avoid solid lifters? These are probably bad questions. What I want is a driver that requires very little owner maintenance.

I want to drive it, wax it, change the oil, have it lubed. Anything more serious than that(brakes, tune ups, etc.) will be done by a local shop. Anything to help avoid shop repairs and maint is a good thing to me. BTW, how much Horse power is high HP? Do I just need to always ask if the engine has solid lifters?

Sorry about the newbie questions, but that's what I am.

Most engines built for street and occasional strip, use hydraulic cams now.
Some serious old school guys still use mechanical cams and some factory engines like L78 and LS6 used them. They are more common in mid year smack block corvettes than chevelles. I wouldn't worry about it, chances are the cars your looking at have mild or stock engines with hydraulic cams.
Solid lifters cause the valve train to be noisy (rattly) especially when cold.

Ok, Dave.
I appreciate your response. I'm glad I don't have to worry about it.
