Hi Eddy!

Yepp. I've already got a 502 and kind of getting use to it... :D
Have a look at my homepage.

Now I'm looking for the BIG stuff.
Would be nice to find someone that could give some feedback on performance  and anything else.
To me it sounds almost too good to have 750hp for racing/cruising/'extra ordinary transportation' at the same time smile.gif

Yeah - Look for posts from 66 283 he has a 632 cu. in. motor in his car. Not a Merlin but still a 632.

It's a "283" until after May 1st - ok? (that's the date of the pump gas drags in Memphis.)

I know a guy with a big inch engine and he said to say the following ;)

"Not familiar with the bill mitchell version - just looked them up.

They didn't even use big chief heads on their 14.5 and 15.5:1 CR "race" motors! It is silly not to run big chief heads on an engine that big because it is bolt on close to 100hp. Even with low compression like me. If you are set on conventional heads, there is no point in going that big - shorten the stroke.

It is now becoming affordable - there are budget 18 deg heads from Brodix (1802) or Dart Pro 1 big chiefs, since now the trend are the Dart 14 deg and RFE 12 deg heads.

I'm not that sure about BM's stuff - it appears pretty tame to only make 750hp. Mine is mild except for the cam and it makes a couple hundred more on pump gas, and piles of torque. I would consider shafiroff for budget short blocks, or reher morrison if you have the cash.

The best thing about having a big cubic inch engine - it doesn't care what gears are in the diff, what size the tires are, or even what gear the tranny is in - it WILL blow the tires off, even in drive at 60 mph."

Thomas, shoot me an email and I'll provide more details.

Does the BM 632 use a tall deck block? Would you have to run custom headers? What about hood clearance?

Hi

66 283,
I will send you an email.
Thanks

Mark,
BM 632 street is as far as I can see from the tech sheet not using a tall deck block.

Thomas,
That 632ci merlin is a "tall-deck"!!!!!!
It's a 10.200" tall-deck,same deck as mine(540ci merlin 111......10.200" tall-deck).!!!!!
Good site Thomas!!!!!!
Do you gonna dragrace that car?

The engine shop's web site has that engine listed at $16,500 with aluminum heads. I could swear in a Chevy High Performance I was looking at last night, it was listed for $10,500.

Thanks Eddy!
Nop, I don't think I'm gonna dragrace it... well maybe a little tongue.gif ...perhaps. It's a little too shiny :D
And yes, you're correct about tall deck! ...ups

Mark!
What a nice Camaro!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
... but I kept coming back to that first picture on the site... the one with the girls tongue.gif

Yes, the headers really needs to be custom, they are today, and very tight.
The hood clearance will be a 'problem'. That could be solved with a customized plastic hood. You have to be careful though, not to reveal too much... :D

$10.500 ?
I did see a short note in one of the threads on Chevytalk that mentioned an ad with $11.000 ...haven't been able to verify that though. Was it in the most recent issue that you saw the ad?
$16.500 versus $10.500 ...some difference, huh!

Well i gotta say, Bill Mitchell "Hardcore" is about as soft as it comes. 780hp. Yeah thats alot. BUT out of 632 ci? For cryin out loud, with 632 ci, 780 hp is a sneeze. H.P. per c.i. is the equivilant of a little 350 making 431 hp. Not that thats not power but it surely isnt "hardcore". And for $16,500 I wouldnt look twice.

Found it! The latest Car Craft May '04. Page 25.

Big Block "Crate Motors"

632 c.i.d. 780 HP Merlin (aluminum heads)... $10,495.

The 509 and 540 are priced above it in the ad, and they're the same price as on the website. I bet they just came down on the price. I don't see how they could have much more invested in the 632, then they would in the 540. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Yeah, cubic inch per hp isn't all that great. But it sure would sound cool to say you've got a 632. And I bet the torque curve is awesome, :D .

Nickel333
Mar 30th, 04, 7:17 PM
oh im sure the torque "curve" most resembels a dead paitents heart moniter. More of a torque "line" than anything.
Now 10,000 bucks aint too bad of a deal if its complete carb to pan and all you need to get are headers.

It has got to be a typo, unless if they have changed the parts that they are putting in it. No way they will sell that for $10,000 with aluminum heads.

I had a 540 with iron heads in my Chevelle, it was plenty of motor for the street.

MarkM

Just checked the April '04 Hot Rod.

Page 97, same ad, same price. 632, Cast iron heads, $9,995. Al, heads, $10,495.

540, al heads, 600hp, $9,695. iron head, $$8,495.

"Carb to Pan"

Who's getting one? graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Someone has to call Bill Mitchell and find out...I wonder if they sent out the wrong add to every magazine that they advertise in.

If it is the same 632 with the same parts that they used in their $16K motor, then it is a good deal.

Damn!

Called them. It is a misprint!!!!!!!!

It's still $16,495. :(

Damn Damn Damn Damn

I was half way to the bank....

OK, I have to keep playing the lottery then.... graemlins/clonk.gif

Thanks for all the info guys!
I have to agree that the HP rate compared to the cui isn't too impressive but one reason for that could be that they were after 'reliable and long lasting power'.
i.e. an engine that will last a long time for all purposes - cruising/racing/transportation. :D

AND I mean 632cui !!
Imagine the face on the guys when they find out what's under the hood...
