: Fuel pressure finally(liquid gauges are junk)

Hi all. Well, I am kind of torn on my fuel pressure problem. After hooking up the electric pump I got stumped once again. I lost fuel pressure according to the gauge when the motor got up to temp. and the car started to run like crap. The tank has a ton of rust in it and I capped off the sump and just hooked up to the original tank pickup. I took the carb off, cleaned it and put new plugs in it. Car fired right up and idled great but the fuel pressure still read 3lbs. when hot. I searched in the performance forum and read about problems with liquid filled gauges and drained all the liquid out. Finally, my fuel pressure showed 12lbs so I adjusted everything and took it out for a spin. I haven't drove a hot street car in 10 years and it actually sent a little twinge down my spine in third gear. The car just knocks the tires off of it and finally I can say I have something to work with. I fully intend to yell at someone Monday at Jeg's about their gauge though it won't matter. The gauge really did not have a factor in my mechanical fuel pump problem but it certainly has mislead me on troubleshooting it. If the weeks goes well, I intend on finally getting it on the chassis dyno. The dominator is not real user friendly in the 2500-3000 rpm range but I have a 1050 with progressive linkage to put on it but I will save that for later. Anyways, the Holley pump is really quiet. If any of you guys are not fans of a noisy fuel pump, this pump is for you. You can't even hear it and this car has street rod headers and 2.5 exhaust and 70 series flowmasters. Anways, if you have a liquid gauge and a fuel pressure fluctuation, it could very well be the gauge.

I've seen the liquid guage problem before. A friend has a 68 and couldn't get it running right. One of the things has said was the fuel pressure kept changing. He'd set the regulator and shut the car off and later on start the car and it would read 3# or 10#. I went to his house looked things over and took off his holley guage and put on my dropped, cracked glass, dented Mr Gasket regular guage and it read 8#. He tried 2 holley guages at $40 a pop. I reset the regualtor to 6# and never a problem after that.

If you talking about those 1 1/2" small gauges, I've not had any luck with them at all be it liquid filled or not. Don't know why, but the small gauges that I had were junk and were 2 to 4 lbs different than the 2 5/8" Autometer guage now inside the hood scoop.

I gave up and threw those little things in the trash.

I have no problem with my autometer liquid filled guage...large size.. steady as a rock.

When I use to work on turbo buick cars for people, I would install VDO liquid filled fuel pressure gauges and never had a minutes trouble with them. I can't wait to litigate this one with a Jeg's employee tomorrow though it won't do anything for me other than make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Does this mean we should start a petition for a nationwide recall or write my local congressman a strongly worded letter (lol).

Until you clean that tank out, you will have the same issues of fuel delivery all over again, and again.

I am going to call Hinshaws in the morning and see if they have a tank in stock. I have a new sump and I am shooting to get this done before I head to the Dyno Thursday. I should have done this to begin with when I put the car back together. The tank was given to me and if I can find someone that wants it, they can have. It may can be washed out real good but I am not taking any chances.

No troubles with my autometer gauge at all. It's right on the money.

I love my small gauges. They both look great sticking half way into the sheet-rock wall in my garage...... :D

Thanks for the compliments on the car. I have had some problems getitng this car on the road that I would have never expected and some problems I was expecting have not been issues at all. I though about the POR stuff. I remember using a Eastwood tanksealer on dirtbike tank one time and it really did work. I talked to a Supervisor at Jegs today. He told me this is the first he has heard of these gauges having a problem but if I return it, they will give me another one. I told him don't do me any favors. I told him to burn all of the ones they had in stock. I only hope when someone stumbles across the same problem they read through the archives.
