As you might have seen in other posts, that L on the cowl tag is thought to represent an SS car. Not a definite, however.

Larry,

While the cowl tag alone cannot determine whether the car you are looking at is a true SS, here is what it does tell you:

1st line
ST 70 13637: model year 1970 Chevrolet Malibu Sport Coupe
KAN: built at the Leeds Assembly Plant in Kansas City
727290: body sequence number

2nd line
TR 796: green vinyl bucket seat interior
45 G : misty green with dark green vinyl top

3rd line
02B: built 2nd week of Feb, 1970
08673: internal code, origin not known
L: special order. Many speculate this could mean "SS" although this letter designator was only used at the Kansas City and Baltimore assembly plants. Do a search on this website for lots of chat about this subject.

Good luck!

Not sure 'body sequence number' would be the correct term for the '727290' number as these body numbers weren't in any type of numerical sequence as they did in earlier years; they pretty much jump all over the spectrum. This number is listed on a KC build sheet both in block 8 (prefixed with "BK") and block 24. KC is also the only 70 plant where blocks 8 and 24 contain the same number; all other plants have different numbers in these two blocks.

See http://www.chevellestuff.com/70velle/70_trim_tags-kan.htm for a sample list sample of some body numbers. KC, Baltimore, Oshawa, and Flint have 6-digit dp numbers while Arlington, Atlanta, and Van Nuys have a 5-digit dp number and they'll include leading zeros (0) when applicable to make the 5- or 6-digit number.

The '08673' number is also (partially) found on the build sheet in block 24 but only the first 4 digits, 0867 in this case. What the last digit of this set on KC tags hasn't been found yet. While both are considered to be data processing numbers, their significance isn't clear.
