: Is a fuel cell street legal?

Hi guys,
As part of my Elky build-up, I'm considering running a fuel cell instead of the stock tank. I'd like to know if there are any legal issues regarding a fuel cell in a street driven car. What do I need to do about the filler cap for emissions testing? Is there any law that says I can't have a fuel cell on the street? It doesn't seem like there should be, but I talked to a guy at Jaz Products today, and he said I wouldn't pass emissions with a fuel cell. Also, are there any kind of specific rules about how the cell is mounted? Do I need to add some kind of fire safety for NHRA-type rules (or for DOT, for that matter)? The cell will most likely be mounted in the bed with a hole cut in the bed to allow the sump to go through the bed floor.

Thanks!
Ryan

is there any specific reason that you want to NOT use your stock fuel tank?

I'm switching over to fuel injection and need either a baffled tank from Rock Valley ($$$$$), or a foam-filled cell, which is quite a bit cheaper. I know there are many guys here driving around with cells - any advice?

Have a Competition Engineering sump welded onto your stock gas tank. Rock Valley is nice but is a lot of money.

I made my own sump for $0 on my EFI car but getting it not to leak isn't a given without a good weld. I use an external pump.

Ryan,
I live in Gilbert, AZ if you need some help with putting a sump in your stock tank I may be able to help you. If nothing else I may know someone who could weld it in for you. what kind of FI system are you using? I read an article where a guy adapted a ford (yuck) EEC IV system I am now gathering the parts up to do this on my Elky, when I complete it I am going to post the installation details on my web site for others.

Thanks guys,
I just might take you up on your offer, Joe. I have to get a new tank anyways - mine's got nothing left.

I'm thinking about running either the Holley Stealth Ram or the 1000cfm throttle body MPFI setup. I will probably run a surge tank between the gas tank and the inline electric pump. I don't think a sump alone will be enough for autocross and road racing (unless I buy a Rock Valley tank, but that's not an option). What did you guys do for a return line? Did you run it back into the sump?

Thanks again,
Ryan

You have to run the return line to the top of the tank above the fuel level.

IMO if you keep the tank above half full with a sump you should be good for autox or road racing.

Why to the top? If you put the return back into the sump it wouldn't empty as quickly.
