I have a 1971 chevelle. I had the original bench seat redone. When I put it back in the car I have no head room and my knees hit the dash. Never drove the car before now so don't know if that is the way it was or its over stuffed? So I bought some buckets off ebay, but they seam to lean to the out side of the car with the adjusters on the outside facing the doors. Did cars come from the factory with knobs pointing toward the console?? Any suggestions?
Thanks Carl 1971 Chevelle

From the whole "no headroom" point of view, I can tell you from experience that when I had my buckets redone for my 64 El Camino, I felt like I was sitting up 6 in. higher even though it was probably only 3 in. Never seen anything but adj. knob and lever pointed out to the door, not in towards the console. From what I remember with my 71 LeMans(which I figure would be the same floor pan), all four legs weren't of the same depth below the seat, so that may be where you're having problems. Good luck. 64elkynss

That's odd that they lean out. You have to add brackets to the floor on the inside to keep them from leaning in towards each other usally. Maybe the brackets have been flip flopped?

The 'correct' way from the factory is for the knobs to be pointing towards the doors and NOT the console. You don't necessarily have to buy the bracket kits out there for sale you could simply use shims to fix the lean you described.
