I should start naming these threads "Things you should know but just don't".

Anyhow, quick question about my new aluminum timing chain cover. Are you supposed to rough up the outer surface that meets up with the gasket? Using something like sandpaper or a wire brush? Again, I should know this but I just don't.

Thanks for the help.

No one roughs up the edges on their aluminum pans i.e. timing chain, transmission etc. where it mates with the gasket??

if it's actually polished I would. use 120 grit sandpaper or similar to give the surface a little texture for gasket and RTV to stick to

Thanks Tom... that's what I was looking for. It is a polished aluminum timing cover.
