: Moth Balls?
Ed Selleck Feb 15th, 01, 1:22 PM I had a friend tell me that putting moth balls in your gasoline increases the octane and gives you a performance boost. Have you all heard of this? It can't be good for your engine or everyone would be doing it, right?
Bob Tiley Feb 16th, 01, 5:54 AM Old wives tale - Apparently some chemical in the moth balls could increase octane, but all the other inert ingedients would probably clog up your fuel filter
Quadzilla Feb 16th, 01, 6:28 AM The resultant product in your fuel tank is volitile and dangerous, donse't do squat to raise the outputpower of anything other than a real high compression engine that pings on anything and will eat any rubber near it.
Simply put just buy better fuel.

hoffbug Feb 16th, 01, 12:03 PM Moth balls are made of one of two materials. #1 Naphthalene or #2 Paradichlorobenzene. The second of which may release some benzene into the fuel? I believe Benzene is a fuel additive and was tested as a straight fuel for racing in the 50's. This reminds me of a good bench racing story.... Where I grew up there was a place that rented mopeds for people to cruise the local trails nearby. We used to rent them and add some Cox glow plug fuel to the tanks (you know the stuff for the motorized toy cars and airplanes that ran teathered to a string, you know.. NITROMETHANE!) The mopeds really ripped right up till the pistons melted http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Quadzilla Feb 16th, 01, 5:26 PM Gasoline is a form of Benzine, higher octane blends have more of it as sell as a whole bunch of other stuff to help it keep. If you want the straight poop on gasoline, a while back I posted a really long and indepth write up on the subject. Do a search for Quadzilla and Octane.

big block lover! Feb 16th, 01, 8:48 PM I have no clue wether or not it brings up your octane or not but we use it here in diesel engines to beable to pass the emmision control laws! Dont know whats in it but it works every time

Redrum Feb 17th, 01, 9:14 AM This brings up three important questions:
1) Where do you find the moth balls? Under their wings?
2) How do you tell the boy moths from the girl moths?
3) How many moths per tank of gas do you need to castrate for this to work?

Quadzilla Feb 17th, 01, 9:10 PM http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum2/HTML/002992.html was the post, but it seems that it was dumped. I'll look around in my own stuff for it and see what I can do.
