I looking for a solid flat tappet cam for my sons 406. It is using Wiseco pro tru flat top pistons w/ 2 valve reliefs and are .005 out of the bore using 64cc head (yet to buy) and scat I beam rods & either a victor jr. or the strip dominator intake, machinist likes the dominator. Machinists is shooting for comp. in the 12's.
I have not selected a converter yet, but will shoot for 4000-4500 range w/ a 4.30 gear ratio and a 26" tire and a powerglide in a 3000 lbs. car.
One that has been suggested has a intake dur. of 254, exh of 259 @ .050, lift int of .552 & .561 on 106 sep. and adv. duration intake 293 & exh. 298 w/ rpm range of 3500-7200.
The car will be for the most part a bracket car w/ limited street time.
Sorry for the long post.
Thanks In advance!!!!!

It will depend strongly on the heads you pick.... things like i/e flow ratio, etc.... don't try to buy a cam then buy heads to match, that's backwards.

The one you mention sounds kind of small for the rest of the combo, though; almost a street cam.

No cam guru here but I think you're right on durationwise with the cam that was suggested. The 400's stroke should like the narrow lobe seperation angle because of less dwell time at TDC. There should be a similar grind available with more lift I would think, .552/.561 isn't much for a serious cam with 254/259 duration @.050. I would think something in the .600-.630 lift range would work better. What heads will be on this engine? Maybe someone else here chime in, TTT

I think you need a little less gear and/or a little more tire. With 10% converter slip you'll only be running 115 or so at 7000 rpm. I would expect trap speeds in the 130 range with a combination like yours.

I hope to use the Dart pro 1 heads w/ a 200cc chamber or 215, bigger if needed.I was told the 200 would make a bunch of torque. Machinist likes 200. Steel or alum. not sure there yet. I am not set on the 26" yet either as those are what I currently have. That could grow to a 28" and the car will see for the most part the 1/8 mile.
Thanks Again!!!!!!

rb69,

For an 1/8th-mile bracket 406 with a 4200 stall converter, I'd use either the 401B7LUN, 287/295 @.020, 259/267@.050, .560"/.580" valve lift, and 106 LSA, or else the 401C1LUN, with 291/299@.020, 263/271@.050, .570?.590" valve lift, and 106 LSA. To get the lift you want, use either 1.6/1.5, or 1.65/1.6, rocker arms.
The 401C1 with 1.65/1.6 rockers is .627/.628 valve lift. To get lifts over .600 with 1.5 rockers requires roller cams.
If you think you need a even smaller cam, I also have a 401B4LUN, 283/291@.020, 255/263@.050, .550"/.570" valve lift, and still 106 LSA.
All 3 of these are tight-lash solids..... Valve lash is .016" HOT, or .012" COLD.
