took my car to the track today.
the combo was exactly the same as the last time i went and got a 13.6@103, 2.25 60ft (you can download that video in my website)
with the only change being headers... from Hooker 2" primaries to $79 summit 1.75" primaries headers.... same piping... flex fan was swapped over for a pair of electric fans...

i am car 1, and 115 (they misread 1HS as 115...)

this is my first run... 5800rpm first gear, 5700rpm 2nd. it has the highest mph.
http://www.musclelogic.com/slpin/1069.jpg

my second run, i got excited and step on the gas a little too much... i was only trying to get a 12 second slip...
http://www.musclelogic.com/slpin/1046.jpg

well, pretty much after that run, troubles start showing up. first, when i try to start my car, i had to hold it in start for a few seconds before the solenoid would engage and crank the motor... voltage dropped to 9V while it did that...

and then after that, my tranny slipped for the first time, going from 2nd to 3rd... (it reved up 500rpm, then slowly dropped down...) but i still got my best et....

http://www.musclelogic.com/slpin/1052.jpg

and after that run, my tranny got worst and worst... when i shift it from 2nd to third, it banged the rev limiter, then i let go of the gas half way, the tranny slips in gear, and i floor it again, and this time, it is in 3rd...

then the run after that, i could not get it into third... i was about 200 ft away from the finish line, shifted into 3rd, banged rev limiter, let go of gas, step on it again (still rev like neutral) and then let go, and step on it again (then its in gear)

i did 1 run in drive, not flooring it, and the tranny shifted properly... the run after that, it did the freerev then rpm slowly drops as it goes into 3rd.... :/

but hey... at least those headers picked up 4mph for me! too bad i didnt get to see 12 though. :(

What type of trans do you have? Do you have a shift kit installed ?

yeah, there is a shiftkit. TH400... 2400-2800 stall... 3.31 rear... 255/60/15 tires

i also have an externally mounted transmission cooler

Ya gotta hook it to get in the 12's, I think you've got the MPH for a 12 sec time slip. Just curious, are your 60ft times worse now than before the header swap?

Get some sticky tires..I assume you have street radials with those 60 ft. times..your MPH indicates a good 12.70-12.80(or even quicker),but you need to get your 60 ft. down to the at least 2.0X to get a 12.95-12.99..and that will happen only if you get rid of your street tires
Use either a drag radial or a DOT slick

Nice job..nice MPH graemlins/thumbsup.gif

In regards to your trans, check your modulator line,it might be a possibility

Can't help you with the automatic.

I agree on the tire comments. We banged around on the 13s all the time. Wasn't until the street slicks went on that times started dropping...low!

Alan, this should be moved over to the Performance forum,I think it would generate quite a bit of interest.
A 69 SS396 that ran 13.23/106.9 MPH with with 3.31's and a 2.27 60 ft. on street radials is impressive in my book

thanks for the positive comments!

Robert, my 60 ft time seem to improve by .1 on my first run, the ones after that was with lowered tire pressure and i got 2.1x... too bad my transmission didn't want to shift into 3rd after that......

the car did feel stronger at ALL rpms, with the most gain at the lower rpms and slightly less gain at the higher rpms.

guess 2" primaries just arent meant for 396s...

i didnt try adjusting my timing for mph yet... maybe i will be faster after timing and different jets???

Check the fluid level in your trans. They act real funny when either low or high.
If it's ok, pull the pan, and change the filter.
Also look and see what kind of junk is in the pan. Some blackish gray stuff is normal.

while you are checking the filter, make sure all the valve body bolts are tight too. i had that happen once in the th350 in my S10. i found 3 of them in the pan and 12 of the remaining 15 valve body bolts were loose. it did not want to shift, especially 2nd to 3rd.

good to hear that you improved.....glade that you listened to some of us with 396 engines thats been thru this many times over.

beleive me or not but you will see 12's with just some carb tunning and timing adjustments.

i have increased mine from 102 mph to 107.19 just in jetting, vacuum secondary opening rate, timing, changing my oil to full synthetic 5w-30 and changing out my flex fan to a stock clutch fan.

i feel for ya on the tranny.....its pretty much toast....as you will find the 3rd gear will go away under load but if you lift some it will shift. the clutches are gone. i wouldnt waste the time or money "trying to fix it" just get it rebuilt.

i think i will check the tranny fluid to see if it has enough later today, but i dont really want to spend any money on the transmission yet... i kinda want to save up for a M20... heh!

ddeennis, how much do you think i could improve my mph?

chris,

checked my tranny fluid today.... it was red and black.... everytime i put the stick in the tube and wipe it, there will be an amount of black stuff on it...
i guess i know what that means....

The electric fan swap from a flex fan in my car was worth 2 mph.

glad to hear that switching to the Summit headers improved your ET.... Mine are hanging in the garage waiting to be bolted onto my 454. ;)

Seeing this is inspiring me to get my dang BBC done, i will move it to my house soon. I can't wait to get out there and run with you sometime!

Perhaps its not enough force but maybe the fluid is being thrown toward the back of the trans and is not getting pumped up from the pan.

Chris.
