I have just dropped a 396 in my dad's 72 chevelle. The vin indicates it was a 307 car but was told at time of purchase it had a 350 in it. I mounted the engine with moroso solid motor mounts. the engine is bolted in and the trans sits about 1 1/2inches away from the back of the block and maybe 1/2 inch lower. Its really a pain and I'm sure that I can't be the only person who has seen this. Please help me.

Auto or manual trans? Without more info, I'd say that your flexplate/flywheel is keeping the trans from mating to the block. This is when an engine tilter is useful. But, this is just a stab in the dark.

Most have said that a 307 car uses different frame mounts than the 350 and Big block motors.
Mine is a 307 car, and I have a big block in it.
I thought the oproblem only affected the motor's height in the bay?
Nothing should stop a trans from comming far enough forward. You do have the middle crossmember loose, right? Be sure the dowel plugs are aligning correctly, and that the torque converter is FULLY seated.

Is it unusual for the engine to not line up with the trans after its bolted in the mounts? In my past experiences the engine wouldn't go on the mounts unless it was lined up with the trans. yes, the cross member is disconnected. I looked at it tonight and it looks like either the engine or the trans is at a wierd angle. like the tail shaft is hanging down and not allowing the top of the torque converter to meet up with the flexplate. Thanks for the ideas I'll just get back out there try them out. A solution will come.
