Does the ZZ4 engine require special headers. I have ceramic coated dynomax headers but I am not sure if they will work with angle plug heads. Also they are 1 5/8". Are these okay? I know that I have seen literature where the motor was dynoed with 1 3/4" headers. Isn't that too large for a low rpm 350?

You will need headers that will clear angle plug heads. Check Dynomax's site and look up your part number (if you know) to see what it says. As far as size goes, I have 1 3/4" on mine, but I got the headers with the engine. I think the 1 3/4" tubes help to cover the entire exhaust port, as the heads have D-ports. The 1 5/8" will work just fine, as far as I know. I don't know about performance with the two sizes, though, but it's probably small (somewhere around 10 hp max???).
Head over to www.thirdgen.org (http://www.thirdgen.org) and poke around their forums. There are a lot of guys with ZZ4's over there.

I have a set of BlackJack AlumaCoat headers on mine, I think they are now the DynoMax (someone correct me if I am wrong). They are a royal PITA for plug access. There is a new thread started here about best fitting headers, and I am asking for any input into the fit of the Hedman Elites. All of the Hedmans state they will fit GM angle plug heads, so if it's true, that's where I will probably be headed.

Forgot to mention that mine are Hooker Super Comps.
Good luck!

I originally had hooker 1 5/8 comps on my ZZ4, I rebuilt it about a year and a half ago and during disassembly realized that the comps covered a good portion of the exhaust port, they are D-shaped ports. During the rebuild I ported the heads, opening up the exhaust side and used Hooker 1 3/4 super comps ceramic coated. Not only are they lighter, bigger, better looking, they fit infinately better. Even though they are bigger tubes, it is easier to get to all the bolts and better plug access. They cost 4x more than the comps but spend the extra $! They went in a 69 Malibu. The stock ZZ4 with 1.6 rockers ran 12.62 @ 107, After rebuild it ran 12.19 @ 110: 11.40 @ 119 w/ a 125 shot of no2. I would also reccommend a good port match, you wouldn't believe how far off all of the ports were!
Good luck
Oregon Malibu,
What were some particulars on your first zz4 combo? That sounds like pretty good times for a stock motor. My car is also a 69 malibu. 307/glide/3.08.

I bought my zz4 from Sallee Chevy and they recommended Super Comps for the best preformance,
they work good for me.
