Was there ever a standard production 454 tall deck engine used in the 6000-7000 series trucks??? Not a bowtie block. I thought it was only the 366 and 427.

To make a long story short I am buying a 1986 GMC 7000 truck with a 454. I was thinking about doing the intake and headers to help build some more torque for this thing.

Thank you,
Steve

No tall deck 454's, that was limited to 427's in trucks as far as I know.

Tom is correct, no Mark IV 454 tall deck blocks. There are a couple of ways to quickly identify a tall deck. First, the top water pump bolt is about 3/4" down from the deck surface where a passenger block is more like 1/4". Second, the intakes on most of 'em have 2 thermostats, the housing looks distinctively familiar to all men. If you see one, you'll see what I mean.
One other thing you might try is to check out the VIN, there are several sites that have all the codes and you should be able to decipher what it left the factory with.

I am almost positive there was only 366 and 427 tall decks, but I do remember a posting here some time ago, and someone mentioned that there was indeed a tall deck 454 for a short time, in addition to the two others mentioned. I never was able to verify it, nor did I ever hear anything else about it. I remember him sounding very positive about it though. True or not, who knows. Might be something to research!

Yep, 366 & 427 truck blocks.
AND, to the best of my knowledge, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL of them were 4bolt blocks.
So, if you want to convert your lo/mid-perf 396-454 to a 4bolt block, locate an old 366, rob the caps/bolts and have your machine shop install-line bore/hone it.
