I was just pointing out the fact that Year One recently mass mailed out postcards announcing a seasonal discount.
I believe this was the card that 69ssmike received.
In the past, Summit has always emailed their discount codes...at least the ones I've received.
FYI, because Year One is a local parts outlet around here, it's a well known fact that they offer a standing discount to almost any valid car club member and not exclusively to TC. This discount eligibility is computer recorded with your records and is automatically credited upon placing an order.

Summit posted about a bunch of items with "limited time discounts" late last month.

I don't think that is true, yes I paid an $8.50 handling charge, but I just bought Two Cragar wheels from Summit and paid almost $50.00 apiece less from them, than any place that sells wheels in Kansas City for the exact same thing.

Dec 7th, 03, 12:01 PM
Yeah, I agree that "free shipping" is somewhat misleading. But on an order where shipping would normally cost in excess of $15, there is a savings.

Unfortunately, I only order a few items from Jegs and Summit these days. And the shipping would usually be less than the "handling fee" on these items.

But for the convenience of having it delivered to my home, it's usually worth it.

yanniz
Dec 7th, 03, 12:18 PM
you are only "pay for shipping" if you can find the item locally at less price than Summit. For example, if I get a part locally for $100, and then almost $9 for taxes, it is still way cheaper to buy it for Summit's price, which I found that is about on average 20-30% cheaper thank local prices, and pay their $7 or whatever handling fee. Of course the more you buy, the more you save as you only pay one handling fee per order.

Having said that, I try to buy as much locally as I can to support the local economy.

:( OUCH!

There must be someone you know who works for a shipping line, trucking line, or one of the train companies that could have it shipped like it was his or hers.

Before our brother-in-law retired from a trucking company, they used to give him free shipping on everything. I think they called it "Dead Heading", or something like that.

Maybe, just maybe, one of the Team Chevelle Members works for one of these companies (?)

That would be great!

However, every time we go to the local retailers (American Racing Supply, National Performance, and others), it seems as if they don't want to bother with a $50.00 order, or a $500.00 order, or a $$$Big Bucks Order. We did get NAPA/Charleston Auto Parts to match Summit on the MOOG stuff, however, that didn't amount too much of an order.

We have been somewhat lucky and fortunate by basically all of the suppliers of our project, as most of them ended up kicking in a great part of the actual cost(s).

If you know some of the local suppliers who will at least match Summit, let us know.

You would think National and American Racing Supply would want the business (?).

Who do we ask for at Checker?

When we bought our 2 Kirkey Pro Street Racing Seats, we went to ARS first, and they had some on the walls. I had to use "Their" ladder to take them off the walls, they wouldn't even take the time to do it. We wanted to see how they felt while actually sitting in them, plus SCTA/BNI/USFRA needs the part numbers before they will approve them.

Ended up having them dropped shipped thru Summit from Kirkey for $80.00 less than the "Absolute Lowest Price We Can Offer" statement from ARS, plus at that time, Summit had the 10% discount code for another $37.00 discount.

Didn't even bother to go back to ARS when we bought our Simpson 6 point racing harnesses.

Catch you later.

I just think Summit (and Jegs) would be happy for the increased volume they would do because of a 10% sale. Maybe sales in 2003 have been TOO good and Summit does not see any need to reward everyone with a few dollars off their prices? Who knows?
All I know is that I have spent ALOT of money with Summit and the 10% discount REALLY came in handy a few times. Of course, it is THEIR business and they can run it anyway they see fit but, that mentality causes me to go seek out retailers with more competitive pricing...like Flatlander and Competition Products. They are smaller but, also more eager to steal away some of the big boys's business so, occasionally you do get a good price on parts.
However, I will say that I have NEVER had a problem returning anything to Summit and that is one in their favor. However, I (like most here) don't have an unlimited budget and the bottom line is the most important thing for me.

yanniz
Dec 13th, 03, 6:00 PM

shane SHANE;

We purchased our TRW Rear Brake Parts from this company this past week-

Parts Distribution Services, Inc. (PDSI)
*Formerly C.W.Carter Company*
4510 Mitchell Street
643-7278 (Ask for Nielsen)
-OR-
591-0278 (Kelly @ Outside Sales)

They (Nielsen) personally told me that they will match and/or beat any Summit price.

They sell Suspension and Brake (Anything you can think of) items mostly for autos, plus clutches, wipers, belts, and a few other items. They actually specialize in big truck items, but are expanding into autos/pickups.

We purchased our Autospecialty/TRW/Power Stop Slotted Rotors, Calipers, and 9-1-1 Extreme Performance Disc Brake Pads from Summit last week, and could have saved at least 5% plus shipping/handling (If it is what they call a "Stocking Order", and you can wait the few extra days), by purchasing them from PDSI

They have been doing this for a while now...sale of selected items for a couple of months.

From the FWIW department.

I do marketing research and new product plans for this market among others. I can tell you that this year was a GREAT year for both Summit and Jegs as well as the industry as a whole. And more to come next year!

I just returned from INDY from the PRI show and it was a fest of smiling faces from ear to ear! This industry is growing and more profits involved as well. 400,000 square feet of just hard core racing orgasmic stuff.

Summit moreover has made a successful entre into sport compact and truck markets bigtime! Just look at a catalog from a couple of years ago and compare it with today! Lot's of truck, SC, and crossover parts! Discounts...they don't need no sticking discounts! Especially when they are the pricing leader and volume leaders in the business. I will go so far to suggest that the privately held Summit is preparing for better profitability for possible IPO or sale. It's coming believe me.

Last fall (02) and winter saw sales off due to the general economy. Things really picked up this year starting in the late spring and has been on a tear since. Even NAPA's aftermarket parts division saw a huge increase this year.

Just my two sense.

SILVERSS454
Dec 21st, 03, 10:53 AM
HOTROD,

Thats kinda what I thought was happening. Why would Summit cut their own throats (profit margin) to spur sales(volume) when they don't have to?
As a privately held company they also have no responsibility to stockholders to show huge increases in volume (comp sales).
With their diversification into the truck and sport compact market, they will also become less reliant on sales in the V8/musclecar/drag racing area. Its a smart business move...don't put all your eggs into one basket! The youth market is a huge area of income for the big retailers. Teenagers today still hotrod their cars like we used to but, how many teenagers do you know that can or even would want to build a 540 cubic inch big block Chevy? Some but, not very many. Most are bolting parts onto a '96 Honda, taking their girlfriends out on Friday night and then taking the same car to the dragstrip on Saturday.
The Summit (and probably soon to be followed by Jegs if they want to survive) that we all grew up with and are accustomed to is changing and for us...its not necessarily a good change.
Although, their maybe a bit of a reprieve IF...IF...they do go public. Then, there will be stockholders to keep happy and if sales ever start slipping, we might see a return of the 10% discount offers.

We continute to purchase thru Summit, and the Jeg's fans will continue to by thru them.

Ten (10) percent is a big number if you are building a "Money Pit".

What we have found out from Team Members, and in our case, Shane, here in Las Vegas, is that there are other suppliers who will match or beat Summit, and who would say "NO" to that.

We found out about this company by accident when we called the TRW TECH LINE-

Parts Distribution Services, Inc. (PDSI)
*Formerly C.W.Carter Company*
4510 Mitchell Street
643-7278 (Ask for Nielsen)
-OR-
591-0278 (Kelly @ Outside Sales)

They (Nielsen) personally told me that they will match and/or beat any Summit price.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, that got us to thinking (?).

Call the tech line from any company you want to purchase from, and ask them who sells in your general area, and maybe (?????), they will turn you on to a company or companies who will match and/or beat Summit, Jeg's and others, and there are quite a few others in the list(s).

Just A Thought????? Or maybe a winning formula?????

New twist time... I buy as much locally as I possibly can. Their prices are in the same ball park although you have sales tax instead of shipping or handling. But the great thing is I can see before I buy... if I order something and it needs to be returned for some reason it is there leg work and hassle and not mine. I also have found that you get WAY better customer service then with Summit and they really go out of their way to help you in a jam. I had a local place once take a brand new race fuel pump off a car they were building to give me in exchange for one that failed so I could still race the next day. That is one heck of a perk you will never get froom mailorder.

The markups up here are horrendous, and when the distributors do have sales, the deals are not passed on. Someday someone is going to set up a co-op, where everyone is an owner, and absolutely kick butt. We even have a Minister of Co-operative Development that will lend assistance if they know how much business is walking out of Winnipeg for anywhere between a few shekels {like wire looms}, to huge, stupid savings on custom wheels. {to be fair, the Wpg. market is only about 600,000 souls, and the trading area would add about 100,000 more}
