I was looking over some old parts from before I rebuilt my engine and saw this. Its an Accel dual point distributor and a Hyd. Comps Cam 305H. What cause the gears to wear like this? The Distributor gear has an allmost knife like edge to it in spots.

I was use a Double roller chain and no cam button. I didn't think it needed one being hyd.

The only "LOAD" that exhists at that juncture would be the load imposed by the oil pump I believe. So I would guess a high volume pump.

You guessed correcly. That's scarey because I put the same pump in this engine. I took it apart and it looked good so I used it again. Now I did find some silicone on the bottom of the pick up tube. Would this have increased the load? I'm useing a Accel billet distributor now. Do you think this will hold out better?

the gear would be the same on both the stock and the new dist. so it would hold up the same.

What causes it is usually a material compatibility issue.
Been there before with Comp & MSD.
Comp says they ain't changed anything & MSD says Comp has changed cores??
Anyway, Comp tests all there cast cams with the GM Melonite gear & this is what they recommend.
I get the GM gear & hone it to .500 from .491 for the MSD & it seems to solve the problem.
I also drill a small hole or put a small groove in the lower part of the distributor housing on the cam side so it squirts oil right on the two gears from the main oil galley which the lower groove on the distributor is part of.
I believe all the new MSD's come with the Melonite gear now.(unless it's brass)
Don't have a clue what Accell uses.
Comp also has a new composite gear that I haven't tried yet but have heard excellent things about from other cam companies which is a good sign. Problem is it is $100.
Don't know what the Accell shaft size is but I would recommend using the GM gear. Not a big deal to have it honed if necessary.
