: Is a Comp 270s too big for this combo?
novadude Jul 8th, 04, 8:43 AM Car is a 1965 Chevy II.
Engine:
-1969 327 - stock shortblock
-300hp/350 crate motor 64cc heads (Iron L98 heads)
-Mild pocket porting and 2.02/1.60 valves
-~9.3:1 C.R.
-Performer RPM intake
-Q-jet
-1.5" primary Hedmans
-2.5" exhaust w/ ultraflo mufflers
Transmission and rear:
Powerglide (for now)
Plan to add a ~2800 stall 10" converter
3.08 gears (planning 3.55s)
What is the best cam for me? I need something that will give a flat torque curve in the 2500-5000 range, given the PG and tall gears. Eventually, I plan to go with a 2004R, but that will not be in the budget for a while.
Does the 270S look good, or do I need to go smaller. What about a similar hydraulic cam (Crane 272 Energizer, for example).
Thanks for the input.
jakeshoe Jul 8th, 04, 10:35 AM Comp 270 is a 224@.050. I think it would work OK in the combo. I wouldn't go any larger, and might go a little smaller depending on your ultimate goals.
The Comp 268 at 218@.050 would probably be great.
You can get these grinds from Delta Camshaft in Tacoma. I've had great luck with their new grinds and regrinds. Their proces are right too. www.deltacam.com (http://www.deltacam.com)
novadude Jul 8th, 04, 10:53 AM I was looking at a Comp solid lifter cam... as far as I know, the 270S is the smallest Comp "off the shelf" solid. I think the 268 cam you are talking about is a hydraulic.
If I end up going hydraulic, I will be targeting something in the 214-218 range. Too big, or just right?
wanarace Jul 8th, 04, 11:47 AM Remeber you can get away with running a bigger solid than hydraulic. Duration is measured at the lobe and doesn't take into account valve lash with solids. From what I understand you can take as much as 10deg of duration off a solid to get the comparable hydraulic.

pdq67 Jul 8th, 04, 1:19 PM Do you have dished pistons b/c the one 327 I've messed with had 4-notch flat-tops and with 67 cc heads and .020" or .022" shim headgaskets was a schosh below 10 to 1 CR. Just about perfect, imho, for a CC 270S...
And the good old CC 268HE is a winner too around 9.5 to 10 CR.......
Should run like a scalded dog!!

novadude Jul 8th, 04, 1:49 PM Flat tops w/ 4 valve reliefs, 0.025" deck, 0.028" composition gaskets (4.1x?? gasket bore). I calculate around 9.3:1
If that engine was backed by a 4-spd / TH350 / 2004R, I feel the cam would be great. The PG and tall gears worry me a bit though. I am planning to buy a GOOD converter to make it all work. I'm just wondering if I should be more conservative.
Eric68 Jul 8th, 04, 4:12 PM Should be just about perfect with 9.3:1 IMO.
Georgia69 Jul 8th, 04, 4:34 PM I think it will work really well. The specs aren't much different from the Comp XS262 solid I run, which is a real sweet street/mild strip cam.
novadude Jul 8th, 04, 4:50 PM So no problems with the 'glide and tall gears (assuming I get a converter)?

I think this cam will work fine with a stock converter. If I were you, instead of spending money on a 2800 stall for the Glide, I'd put that money towards a TH350 with a stock converter. 20 years ago, I had a 65 Nova with a 350 engine, TH350 trans, and 3.08 gears. Wow!!! Exciting ride smile.gif
BIGMOE65 Jul 9th, 04, 10:11 AM Im running this cam except I have a 350 engine, Im running same gears but with a th-350 trans. This cam will not work with a stock convertor, trust me I tried it. The car couldnt even spin the tires. I ended up putting in a 2200 stall convertor and its great now, nice burnouts. Good luck.

Transmission will be slipping a lot.I would be looking at a custom 9.5" converter, and not something off the shelf. I am running a 9.5" converter in my daily driven Mustang (stock was 12"), and I log 500 miles per week, 365 days per year, through rain, snow, etc. It is a 2600 stall, but you'd never know it until you are hard on the pedal. Granted, it is a lock-up converter, but even with the converter unlocked, it feels almost like a stocker.
The downside is that a converter like this is $$$, but they are available. I figure a $500-$700 converter is cheaper and easier than a Fresh TH350, converter, shiftworks kit, etc. If I do swap transmissions, I want to just go with a 2004R, which will cost even more (someday down the road, I will do this).
BTW.. the 9.5" converter mentioned above is made by precision industries. I cannot say enough good things about this company and thier products.
Thanks for everyones input... I was worried I was going a little too big, but it sounds like this is not the case. smile.gif
novadude Jul 9th, 04, 11:15 AM Oh... BTW... Georgia69... I LOVE your car! I saw a pic on another thread, and it brings back memories. I took my drivers license test (at the age of 16) in a '69 Malibu 350 that was the same color combination as your car. smile.gif

I was gonna change the color, but he talked me out of it, and then did an awesome job for a fair price.

Good luck. me too, I wish I had the money for gears, my car doesn't run worth a crap below 2300rpms (about 30mph for me). I've gotten my car to bark 2nd (2.73s and 29"X 275mm tires) a few times though. I had some bald 235-60s recently that would haze at 3000 rpms but not standing start. people s**t brick when I blow thier doors off on the freeway, especially when they think I have run out of gear at around 120mph and then I up shift :D . to be honest I am scared of my car and it only runs 14.x's with my bonneville gears.
BTW in the past 7 months I have had this motor built I have broken 2 motor mounts on the driver's side...I've since chained it down so the whole car rocks more.
edit:270h is my cam.
