Just installed a balancer on my 454. How do I know its on/in all the way? I think I've got it but looking for peace of mind....

It will bottom out and a decent tap to it's inner hub w/ a 3 pound FT, it will sound like a deep THUD!!

If you want to make sure just do some quick measuring. With dial calipers or a depth mike measure from the end of the crank to the timing gear, now put the damper on a machined surface with the pulley side up and measure from the machined surface to the washerseat area. Now find the difference. After the damper is on measure from the damper seat to the end of the crank, the measurement should be the same

This puppy was very very difficult to put on and was very difficult to take off. I ended up breaking my installer. (oh well I'm eating $33 bucks by not taking back to autozone) I'm thinking that it may have broke when it bottomed. With regarding to the dial calipers, its already on so I'm screwed with that method.... I may ask a fellow ZZ454 owner to measure the gap between the timing cover and the balancer and let me know what it is.....

With an ATI these are the numbers
The last number is what you care about :)

gear & damper 2.710"
.520" Damper step to face
.060" crank to step
.580" crank to face of damper

Thanks for those numbers. I'm sure the stock damper is the same because if it weren't, it would throw everything off...

Bolt the water pump on real quick, set the two pulleys in place and make sure they line up.
