: body or pannel guys in Seattle ?
anychevy May 6th, 07, 2:54 AM I need a body man or someone with some panel experience to take a look at this 70 before I shell out 45k !
http://www.memorylanemotors.net/carp...ar=70chevss454 (http://www.memorylanemotors.net/carpics.php?car=70chevss454)
I'm a little concerned about the quarters, trunk floor, rocker pannels and the door to fender and door to quarter gaps.
I'd be more than happy to pay someone for there time, via Pay Pal, Western Union, wire transfer whatever ?
Or a free meal in Seattle in July when I'll be there. Any place you like !
This dealer is asking top dollar for this car and I want to be real sure I know what I'm buying.
I know it's expensive, but if I subtract my airfare, time off, hotel, hire car etc. It would be the same.
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP :D
The owner Mark is there Monday to Friday 10 till 6 only
http://www.memorylanemotors.net/map.html
thanks for any response.
I bet at the price they're asking it will still be for sale in July when you get here :)
anychevy May 6th, 07, 7:28 PM I bet at the price they're asking it will still be for sale in July when you get here :)
Maybe ? hope so, but if not, I'm sure I'll find another one somewhere,
Thanks.
gotago May 6th, 07, 7:38 PM Well, there is a guy here that is selling his Canadian Documented numbers matching 70 SS, or at least I'm told he's going to sell it. I've never seen the car but I'm told its very nice. His name is Bruce and he posts by Chevy Rat if you're interested. All of us work at Fort Lewis, about an hour south of Seattle. As I said, if it was open on the weekends, I'd be glad to scope it out for you but its real tough to get away anymore during the week.

I've spoken to Bruce, really nice guy, sending photos when he's back from a buisness trip, it sounds like a very original, unmolested, nice, correct car
Yes he's only open weekdays unfortunately, but thanks anyway.
kettbo May 7th, 07, 1:33 AM Mark,
Ya done stole my thunder re Bruce selling his car!
Dave,
I can't wait to look at Bruce's car! The pics look awesome! I work down the street from Bruce and Mark at Fort Lewis.
Down under, do you HAVE to convert to right hand drive?
George

No George, not anymore thank god.
yes, Bruce's car sounds nice, I suppose you'll beat me to it :( well good luck.
Is it New Zealand where the car has to be converted, before it can be released into the country? I remember seeing a show, that stated that left hand cars weren't even let into the country.

Maybe ? They have some strange laws  but If the car is more than 30 years old it's exempt here, NZ I think is the same now.
You know any body guys in Seattle ?:D
I'm heading out as soon as I can on Thursday, heading for Spokane. If I can get this house finished at a reasonable time, I might be able to swing down there. I don't wanna say this, cause I probably won't get outta here in time, but I might. If I don't leave here till like 2:00, I'll get totally screwed in traffic if I head down there, which wouldn't really matter to me, But my Momma will be waiting in Spokane. I'm kinda bad about getting over there to visit.:o
I will also state that I'm no body man, but you can look a my website to see the work I've done. I do know alittle about 70-72 chevelle inner structure. I'd try to take some pic's up close, and I'm pretty picky, especially at 45 grand.

Well that would be great if you can make it, no pressure though, Brett looked over it and couldn't see anything obvious and I'm probably being paranoid ? But at 45k I would like a second opinion on some things that didn't quite look 100% ?
Cool , I'll got back to you on Wednesday night, I should know by then what time Tory and I are getting out of here on Thursday.

Thank You very much. Hopefully It will be painted this winter, I'm just trying to get all the mechanical stuff finished. My luck would be too paint it then ruin it doing all changes. I'm kinda from the "ugly, but faster then hell" crowd.:D
What do you got down there? I gotta feeling you must own something.

Does a mortgage count ? I've owned some interesting stuff, one you may like is the TC feature car of December 2001, sold it in 02 :( and still regret it, alot !
Ohh, that's cool. Definitly not too many of those around.
anychevy May 7th, 07, 4:09 AM Ohh, that's cool. Definitly not too many of those around.
I called him up the other day and asked him if he'd sell it back to me :noway: "The things we do for love"
oops I'm quoting lyrics again. "10cc" It must be getting late.:boring:
kettbo May 7th, 07, 5:20 PM Dave,
I'm not buying Bruce's 1970 SS 396......it is still available.
I understand it to be very, very nice. I have a 68 RatVette that only occasionally sees the light of day so I'm not in need of a second hanger queen! The sole reason for beefing my daily driver 1970 El Camino is so I can abuse it and leave the Vette for simply waxing and polishing!
I was simply saying that I'd like to see Bruce's car. I've become aware of Bruce "Chevy_Rat" and Mark "gotago" just in the last few weeks. I've only seen pics of their cars... I'm also trying to get Brett to forget all about a 406SBC and to put a 454 into his sharp 1968 Elky!

No worries George, yeah it sounds like a tidy car and with all the paperwork he'll sell it for sure.
50 ? well he's got to start somewhere right ?
Brett should definately go RAT in that nice elky of his, your right.
We should organize something when I'm there in July ? I'm allready taking Brett and probably Dave out for a steak, you want to come ?
kettbo May 7th, 07, 8:03 PM Dave,
I appreciate the offer to join you and the others for a steak dinner. At this point rather far into the future.... I'll be pretty busy with the Army ROTC Camp at Fort Lewis this summer. Keep me posted as to your travel plans.
I'm still gathering BBC parts for my low buck CHARITY RAT.
That Brett, he's a shifty one. I've been hammering him to shift gears and move on up to BBC Country with his 68 5-spd beast. Not that I have anything against the SBC, just OVERKILL with a BBC is just about right! He argues for the better handling of the 406 SBC, lighter wt, and he won't have to get SBC to BBC conversion parts...he claims he can use that cash for bigger heads to feed his 406. Not saying the 406 is a bad decision, I just feel the 454 is the way to go......Brett's 68 has the same blue with blk vinyl top and black hood stripes as my 70. Looks like his car is nicer.....
anychevy May 8th, 07, 12:17 AM Hey "no worries" if you can make it ? great.:beers:
El Camino handling ? Sorry Brett, but isn't that an oxymoron ? :D Kidding.
I'm a 427 fan myself, cheap to build, easy 450 hp and rev like crazy !
Brett "once you go RAT you'll never go back" trust me.
Brettd85 May 8th, 07, 3:23 AM Dave,

Jeez, you guys are so hard on me. George has made it pretty hard for me to still want small block. I think it would be cool to have a small block that can beat most big blocks. If you guys really think that for the same cost that I can do big block, I will do it. I need 450 hp and 500 ft lbs of torque. If I am going big block it has to be at least a 427 or bigger. I will need new headers, front springs, and possibly exhaust mods. Also we need to deduct the price of the new aluminum water pump I just bought and the slight increase in gas useage. I dont really understand why I would need a new fan shroud, shouldnt the fan be in the same spot?
Oh, and wait until you see my car in person. It looks great in pics, and Lord knows I put enough money into it, but its no show car. :noway: I will point out all the problems with it at the Smokey Point show. :(
El Camino handling ? Sorry Brett, but isn't that an oxymoron ? :D Kidding.

Brett "once you go RAT you'll never go back" trust me.
Dave, yes it is an oxymoron. This is why small block is so much better. Why make it worse by adding 300 lbs to the front? 300 lbs is quite a bit all the way up there on the front tires.
So once you guys can promise me that all my requirements are met, I will go big block. If its really worth it, it should be easy for you guys to do that! :)
anychevy May 8th, 07, 4:09 AM :(

Yes I'm familiar with the handling characteristics of the "ute". I have the scars to prove it !
Yes you have a point, the extra 300lbs isn't going to improve things.
I'm going to have to do some research  but I'll have an answer http://www.chevelles.com/forums/images/icons/icon3.gif 450 HP ?
So what are your price specs for the small block? My solid roller 454 (30 over) in Old Blue was $4300 to build. Pretty sure it's more than 450hp though :D
BBC 454 core $3-500 off of Craigslist.
Good hyd flat tappet Cam setup $200
$5-600 in machine work
pump gas range pistons $400
$230 Dynomax ceramic headers
$150 Intake dual plane
$250 good Holley 750
So about $2500
or maybe something like this:
http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/pts/325300183.html
or this:
http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/pts/323607746.html
anychevy May 8th, 07, 5:04 AM http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/pts/325300183.html
Add alloy heads and intake @ $1200 you should lose about 150 lbs ? where else can we save weight ?
66 Buick Special May 8th, 07, 8:26 AM I don't want to hear about an Elky not handling... WITH a big block to boot.
I forget his log in but this belongs to a teamchevelle member and I saved his video to my favorites as soon as I saw it...
http://media.putfile.com/148-mph
I think you'll agree that he has managed handling and a high output big block in the same elky! :)
Dave May 8th, 07, 11:48 AM couldn't get the vid to load, but I'm pretty sure that's KAA you're talking about.
66 Buick Special May 8th, 07, 12:13 PM Dave you were right it is KAA.
I checked and the video took me two trys to load here at work and it took it a minute to buffer. He has several vid's on that putfile site.
Here's one of a complete lap at BIR. He ONLY gets to 146mph instead of 148 on the other video. But it really shows the Elky's handling ability. For a street legal car it's pretty incredible.
http://media.putfile.com/202-Lap-At-BIR
I can't believe he finally put that car up for sale. Do you know if he sold it?
flink69SS May 8th, 07, 1:59 PM So once you guys can promise me that all my requirements are met, I will go big block. If its really worth it, it should be easy for you guys to do that! :)
Brett- Come for a ride with me and you'll understand...
Some suspension work and decent tires....I'll take that offramp at 70mph.
I'm looking for an I-5 rematch on the way to the show...:waving:
kettbo May 8th, 07, 6:59 PM Brett,
You show signs of wavering from your 406 SBC!!!!!!
Yes, a personal decision to make.
Conversion Costs:
naturally the secondary trade in used parts is cheaper but here are some average costs for new stuff
Headers $150
Exhaust mods? Correct, probably will need different length or spacing afterward..
Dunno, it possibly could bolt up...newer systems with an H or X pipe make this less likely....$0-$60 I think would be a fair price range on this.
Fan Shroud...maybe the SBC one will work, think they are about $50
You already have a big Aluminum Radiator....
Frame mounts and engine mounts are the same
You will new new brackets for the Alternator and PS Pump, $50?
YES, you CAN build a SBC to beat MOST of the mild street BBCs but it takes a lotta CUBIC DOLLARS! A low to mid-BUCK Big Block is really the way to go.
Check out the threads under PERFORMANCE;
low-buck 454, 228/238 cam, 8:1 454 etc.
Several build-ups.
Owners report good manners, good drivability, low 13-high 12 sec times with very moderate street gearing. Or consider that several of these use a STOCK BLOCK 454, Perf RPM, 3310 modified to have a secondary metering block (vs stock metering plate) 74/84 jetting, HEI, and a healthy bumpstick.
Get in touch with FRYNTYR. He has a Bad-Ash 69 BBC Chevelle and a cruiser68 SBC Chevelle. He has a stack of BBC engines and parts 396-427-454 to get you started. Think a 427 (built from 454 block and 396 or similiar 427 crank and 427 pistons) with your 5-spd would be the bomb! A certain "cool-factor" for 66-69 cars saying there is a 427 under the hood.
Darryl has several low-mile "runner" 454s too. You name it, he has it. I know you wanna build your own engine, being a Mechanical Engineering student and all.
George
Here's my combo, put it together for around 5 grand. That includes alotta chrome/polished goodies.
454 .60 over
cast crank
truck rods
KB hyper domes = about 10.5:1 compression
781 heads stock valve size
Crane Powermax 286, matched valvetrain
Edelbrock performer
Holley Street Avenger 770
Mallory unilite, 8.8 wires
Flowtech 1 3/4's headers
TH400 TransGo shift kit (drilled big) B&M 2400 holeshot

For the suspension I've added.
Eibach pro-kit 1.8" drop springs.
Bilstien shocks
UMI adjustable lower rear arms
Edelbrock adjustable upper rear arms
Wolferacecraft spherical bearings
Four wheel disc brakes
16x8 wheels and tires off of my ZQ8 2003 S10
As it sit's, it corners really well.:D
Up front, I'm about to add the SC&C stage II kit, from what I understand, that's really gonna make the difference. Yeah, the BB add's a couple hundred pounds up front, but with all the mod's, I can stay with'em in the corners, and flat out OUTHORSE them on the straights. And with the 3:08's, I can really wind her up there on the straights.
gotago May 8th, 07, 9:26 PM Do they even make parts for small blocks anymore?
There is no replacement for displacement. Drive a torque monster BBC and you'll feel the difference. Besides, what are you going to do with all the room under the hood? All that room ain't natural.............
kettbo May 8th, 07, 10:48 PM Brett,
Mark GOTAGO said "what are you going to do with all the room under the hood? All that room ain't natural............." or something similiar to me about my Elky when he looked under my hood last week! So, don't feel bad or like he's sorting you out for any malice! He's Mr Equal Opportunity!
Hmmmm, I got the BBC bug back around 1974...got a ride in Perry's 66 SS Chevelle 396/375 4-spd....former braket race car since new 66-72 at the old Lion's Raceway in SoCal. Perry bought it late 72, still has the car. What fun.
My first car, 68 Nova in 1977 got a built 427, th400 and 12-bolt 4.56 by 1979.
Gearhead mentor neighbor had schooled me since age 14.... actually we rebuilt the engine in Perry's 66 and 2-3 other engine builds before I built my 427. I freshened the 427 in my 68 Vette back in 1993 as the seller said the engine was frozen (not the case, the Muncie was totally out of gear oil).
I'm really chomping on the bit to build the BBC for my 70 Elky.:beers:
Something very pleasing about the sounds of an engine coming together.:D
66 Buick Special May 9th, 07, 1:03 AM Not only do I have a space saving SBC in my Buick, but I have the single pot manual brake master cylinder. I also don't have a squirter bottle, and I'm looking at my windshield wiper motor with bad intent... since it doesn't seem to work anyway.
Heck, I even have Accel shorty header plugs! :D
kettbo May 9th, 07, 2:02 AM Greg,
I like your Buick Special especially as some of my former parts are in your ride.
Glad only the rocker nut came loose. Am sure you have corrected all this.
I've been giving counsel to Brett,,,,gee, 4-6 weeks now....
Gee, almost like taking a Lab Course.
At least now he's warmng to the topic.
Handling? ElCamino? Don't worry about it...maybe a Camaro where it has a chance to handle.
anychevy May 9th, 07, 2:36 AM Sorry if I've helped stir up the SB vs BB thing all over again Brett ?
gotago May 9th, 07, 12:19 PM Ah, all that Big Block talk is just my way of compensating................................
FRYNTYR May 9th, 07, 1:59 PM OK, ok,,,,I have to chirp in.
When I was thumping the streets in my chevvle when it still had my small block in it, you couldn't sway me to change to a big block. I was 17 and running 12.40's at the strip. I was killing guys on the street that were claimed 11 second cars.
My co-workers, at the machine shop i was working, kept telling me to do a bb but I would always say "why, I thrash BB's every day with my small block"? They then told me with what I have done with small blocks, just think what I could do with a big block.
I finally built by first low-buck big block at 18 years old. First time to Spokane raceway park was 10.90's-11.00's with the front wheels coming up and off the ground.
At that time people would search for me to street race because I was some punk kid running around kicking all these older fella's a$$'s that were supposenly fast.
Well, once the word got out I was running around in a 10 second daily driver, the influx of guys wanting a piece of me stopped.
I know, I know, I'm running a 350 in my little Welfare nova, but hey, it's running 10's. Just wait and see what she does with one of my extra 427's laying around.
Want your car to be fast, sure you can do it with a 406. Want it to be visious and draw blood just by tapping the throttle? Then build a BB.
gotago May 9th, 07, 4:22 PM one of my extra 427's laying around.
I wish I had that problem!! If you ever need to clear out some space, let me know!!
kettbo May 9th, 07, 8:21 PM GOTAGO,
Believe me, if ya wanna GO LARGER, see FRYNTYR.
Heck, he'll probably take interesting running 396 RatMotor trade-ins!
Hmmmm Darryl, nice 396 trade-in as a "starter engine" for Chris's 69 Nova....in exchange for 427 or 454 stuff....
FRYNTYR's my GO-TO guy.
His 427s are made from 454 blocks and his stash of small stroke 396 and 427 cranks and 427 pistons topped with 781 oval port open chamber heads usually fitted with 2.19/1.88 valves. About 10.5:1 with pop-ups and the 781 heads 113 cc chambers. The same sort of beast is in my RatVette as we discussed at lunch. His engines have bigger cams, more strip than street orientation. There are also other chances to excell with his mound of 454s.
GHK
Dave, back to the original task. I'll be leaving Mt Vernon around 10:00am, heading south. I'll make it to the dealership around noon. I'm gonna print off his info, and call as soon as I'm on the road, to make sure he'll be around.
I'll look indepth in the 1/4/drop-off area, as well as floor/trunk floor area. Looking at all of the fender/door/hood/trunk lid gaps. I'm taking my digital camera, will get good pic's of the usual problem area's to send to you. Let me know of any special requests, I'll try to accomodate.

Brettd85 May 10th, 07, 3:36 AM Hmmm, still thinking. BB or SB? If I had unlimited fund I would go BB, but I dont. Still not sure if I believe George that I could build/convert a BB for the same price as my 406... He is working on it though. :hurray:

BB is easy HP and torque and the weight can be counteracted with some suspension mods. as previously stated.
Alloy heads would definately help but will add around $1200 to the build.
It can all be done with the right help, advice and your money ! :D
Dave May 10th, 07, 3:58 AM Lot's of YOUR money.:D And I got lotsa idea's.
Dave May 10th, 07, 10:21 PM O.K., I've seen the car. Very nice, very nice, but it does have a few issue's. It's been re-painted, with a very high quality paint job, saw some pic's of the resto. The car was stripped to bare metal, there are some patches in the rear 1/4 area. Supposedly got new front fenders, has all original floors/trunk, all seemed to be quite solid. I thought all of the door gaps looked good, not perfect, but factory tolerance. Hood and trunk were nice and straight, nice paint job, I thought it looked really nice.
Under the hood was really nice also, quite correct, a few misc pieces of chrome that didn't belong on this car, but generally correct.
Under the car, great condition, a little road grime, but very nice. Aftermarket 12 bolt cover, nice exhaust, fresh Drivelines NW balanced driveline. Fresh looking rubber. knocked on all of the floors, seemed to be solid, not hollow sounding.
Lifted up the mat in the trunk, some small surface rust, stuck my hand down in the corner, where the rear of the wheel well meets the drop-off and the 1/4 rolls in, has been patched. Done proffessionally, but patched.
Gotta go everyone is starving, Dave I'll get in touch with you tonite. Got some pic's, and I want to PM you the number where I'm at. I really want to talk in person, as this is a BIG decision for you.
I do like the car though, you will need to talk to me to make the final decision.
See ya'll later.

Thanks for the great detailed photos and descriptions that made it almost like being there.
Now it's negotiating time.
Wish me luck.

So what did you think of it? I noticed the hood was too high, some dents in the windshield chrome. The door gaps werent perfect. The chrome around the back window had a weird gap in it. Also the front springs had a spacers in them. There was a very small drip from the trans as well. Also the spatter paint in the trunk was peeling off and surface rust was forming in the trunk. Other than that it looked like a very nice car. I would be a very proud owner.
Dave May 15th, 07, 3:23 AM I liked it, alot.
The hood is no problem to adjust, I really didn't notice it.
Windsheild chrome could be replaced, no biggie.
The door gaps didn't look out of the ordinary to me, just like a factory car.
Rear window chrome, it used to be a vinyl top car, the factory didn't spend as much time doing the 1/4 panel work, as on a hardtop. Vinyl top cars usually got Bondo, while hardtops got leaded. Too be honest, I didn't notice that so much. I was too busy sticking my hands down in the drop-off's, and banging on the floor.:D I think I mighta made the Owner a little uncomfortable.
I saw all kinds of stains on the floor there, I don't think a small tranny leak will bother Dave. I think He like's playing with wrenches.:D
The trunk could use a good cleaning, and get rid of the trunk mat. Fresh coat of spatter paint, and your good to go.
But I really liked the overall look of the car, I can only hope mine look's as good someday. Like Dave said, 454,M-22, 4:10 Posi, that thing's gotta really move. (Well, He was a little more colorful then that)

Pulled the tranny out of a corvette once, what a bitch  the exhaust runs through the crossmember.
A few drips don't worry me, but if it pisses out ? I'll fix it.
All those little things helped me knock the price down. So many thanks again.
Brett, I may have an intake for you in a few weeks :D LOL ask Dave.

All good things come to those who wait I'm told, so I'm waiting :boring:
66 Buick Special May 25th, 07, 1:50 PM I think I would have told your wife you had to come to Seattle on business.
That way you could drive it and sleep in it until it ships!:D
George,
Don't you have any connections? Load that beauty up on a transport plane on base and get it home for anychevy. You said you were looking for more free time, so what's the worst thing that could happen?;)
Greg
kettbo May 25th, 07, 2:16 PM Greg,
Yeah, sure, load it on a transport.
You know, things never work out. I was based for many months near Tall'Afar, Iraq on an air base. Perhaps a helicopter or two per day used the strip. So, more or less had access to a full military length runway. Fastest thing I had was a POLARIS ATV.
I returned to WA, had RatVette cleaned-up. Always Cops, Traffic, and pedestrians.
This is a parallel to the Time<----->Money Continueum. When I had lotsa time when I was remodelling, I had little spare money. Now I'm back to work plus getting a pension, I have little time!

It's leaving Seattle this weekend, should be on a boat next week, 4 weeks at sea, then home :hurray:

After three knowledgeable opinions and a lot of negotiating, yes we finally made a mutually satisfiying deal. I'm hopefully still coming in July or maybe August (work permitting) either way I still owe you guys a meal :D
Brettd85 May 26th, 07, 12:30 AM Well congrats on the purchase! My "knowledgeable opinions" probably didnt help too much, but I included enough pics to make your computer crash. Either a meal or big block parts would be awesome! :D
