Dont know if this is the proper forum, but here goes....

I have to decide what kind of tach im going to get for my car. Im looking at the auto meter super comps, but I cant help thinking that they are pointlessly huge and they remind me of neon blue lights and spoilers. also, where the hell would you mount a tach that big? I have to have a shift light cause the car gets real squirley and I cant take my eyes off the road. :D  What are your guys takes on these things? And what tachs do you guys use?

I've seen people mount them in front of the console...like where the hump in the floor is for the transmission. That way it doesnt stick out so much, and you would still be able to see the shift light when your racing.

i've heard of people using a smaller tach mounted on the steering column, and then wiring up one of the idiot lights as a shift light. HOT ROD had a feature on a sleeper '65 four door chevelle done up like that.

Summit sells a tach w/shift light for $40

I'll agree with mr 4 speed. When I put the tach in my 65 in dash it will be so much nicer than a huge unit that is strapped onto the colum like many people do with their 65's.

I have a monster tach but ended up getting a shift light also. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten the smaller tach. Tuning and burn outs is the only time I look at it anyway.

I think tach selection depends on how you are goig to drive...mostly track...get the best tach you can afford..big is better..playback is great..street of just to fun around with...who cares...get one thats pretty

I have a monster tach in my 1970 454 Chevelle...
I mounted it on the left side of my dash and put the giant shift light next to it, I made my own bracket for it too, so I can change the position when ever I want. With out cutting up the dash.

Adman,
I know you didn't ask but I thought I'd mention:
For a 64 or 65 I can highly recommend a VDO "Series 1" tach.
http://www.vdona.com/aftermarket/aftermarket.html
It has a 0-7000 rpm range.
It blends in well with factory instruments and it mounted in clock hole with a couple bits of flat stock and a gasket to seal to inst panel face. I made an "o" ring out of vacuum hose
also, it helps having an extra cluster to practice on.

I have a tach but who in the crap has time to look at it.Really, the only time I use it is to set the idle. When I race it's by sound& feel. The sound of the motor tells me when it's time to shift.I don't think there is a right or wrong it's up to the person doing the driving.Myself it would be a med size.

you don't necessarily have to have a shift light or tach but i feel much more comfortable havin them there. especially the shift light. this is how mine is in a 69.

one thing about the shift light is you do not have to have it stuck in your face. They are usually very bright so mount it anywhere (except the truck ;) ) and you will see it. I have a monster tach with shift light mounted on the bottom of the dash just below the radio and have no problem seeing the light.

68SS454 I like my Autometer Sport Comp Monster Tach. Mine is mounted on the inside of the A pillar using the original trim screw. I have bumped my head on it a few times after I first installed it. I like those small guages that guys run an the A pillar, thats where I got the idea. If you check out my webpage it's the fourth pic on the first page.

No rev limiter,,,just the small tach on the steering column,Mallory Unilite/w blaster II coil,no ignition box...just plain and simple and pretty darn consistent at that(pending traction). See my First TNT thread :D

I got rid of my Monster tach & got a chrome autometer street series. It look way more at home in my interior. I thought I would use the shift light at the track but I dont. I just go by sound & feel. Even when I had the 4-speed & nitrous.
