I need to know how the fuel gauge(tank unit) wires run. Where does it plug in from and where does it go thru the body to the tank unit.

TAN wire runs in the rear lighting harness along the floor, under the back seat, up the divider wall, through the trunk, under the trunk seal lip of the left hand quarter, to a connector next to the licence plate light connector, through a grommet to the tank.

Is that a separate wire from the "ribbon" harness?

No, The dash harness connects to the intermediate "ribbon" harness, which then connects to the rear harness. The intermediate "ribbon" harness carries all electrical (dome, brake, turnsignal, parking and gas gauge) wires to the rear of the car. This pic (a 70) show where the dash harness connects to the intermediate "ribbon" harness. gas gauge wire is the light tan.

Correct, they are on a 70 too. But it is not flat where it plugs into the dash harness.
