running a mild 468, had a comp hyd flat tappet and 781's, TRW L2465 pistons, wanting to give it more cam, tried a 714 lift comp roller we had in the shop, but would require flycutting the pistons. Really do not want to get into that on this engine, anybody know what kind of lift or cam we can run without having to cut these pistons ? I know we have a lot a varioubles, we had about .015-.020 on the intake with the comp roller with no head gasket or lash....looking at some comp solid flat tappets in the 680 lift range. going in a 2600lb car race only braket car, 400 w/brake. also have either the 781's with a victor jr and 850, or rect port open chambers w/a team G and a dominator, thanks for any help Rob

Rob,

Tell me what Comp hydraulic you had, and which .714 you stuck in there, and I can pick you a Comp roller that will fit, or design and make you one that will.

Hi Rob,
Those pistons are not real "user friendly" when it comes to large cams & I am very surprised you have that much clearance with a .420 lobe unless it is real short in duration & on wide centers.

Anyway,,, :)
Just a question but if you had .015 with no lash or gasket on the intake side what is the problem?
This is a minimum of .070" if you are using a normal .040" gasket, probably more & if with checking springs you can add another .015"+ for deflection in a Rat with a roller.

This is to me at least way safe on the intake side.
The exhaust is another story,,,

And just for info, lift in itself has almost nothing to do with p/v clearance ;)
Duration, lobe "intensity" & separation & where the cam is installed are the biggies..

Thanks for the input, tried to get harold on a pm, anyway the cam we were running was a comp magnum 292H, 550 lift 244 dur @50, with the oval port 781 heads, a knock-off victor JR, flowed 850 turbo 400 w/brake 3000 conv. 4.10 gear, 10"x28 slick we ran consistant 7.0's 1/8 11.0's 1/4 on pump gas in a all steel 79 camaro, that was street driven. Now the just bought a outlaw pro street 86 camaro, 2600lbs, want ti run this engine as a starter to get my son used to driving this car and actual racing... the comp roller we tried is # 11-713-9 714 lift 254 int, 262 ext. dur @50 on a 108 centerine, I have bothe the oval set-up as well as a rect port set of iron heads and a team G with a dominator, any help apprciated..and yes I know this is a chevelle site....have had 5 while being on here..just sold my 70...just going back racing with my sons...Thanks Rob
