: 5/4 Monroe Drags... who's coming?
66 Buick Special May 4th, 07, 4:38 PM If it's not raining (35% chance) I am planning on heading up to Monroe tonight and hammering on the Buick a couple times.
Ben if you still are interested in riding out there let me know.
Anyone else planning on going?
Greg
kettbo May 4th, 07, 5:35 PM Keep it between the lines (ref you mentioning my parking job the other day).
Let me know what the beast runs!
George
gilby246 May 4th, 07, 7:02 PM i havent looked at the schedule because my internet connection is brutally slow right now but i didnt think the next TNT night was till the 18th
finally got over to evergreen speedway sight...yup, there are drags tonight
RAMBO May 4th, 07, 7:48 PM I'm out for tonight guys- I have to run to seattle and measure SS stripes....
Next time though!
66 Buick Special May 4th, 07, 7:58 PM Glad you said SS and not ZZ :D
I think I'm going to head up there shortly. Looks like blue skys for the moment...
gilby246 May 4th, 07, 8:13 PM im not going unless i find someone I can drag along with me.
I ended up going by myself last time and had to leave all my tools, and other things I brought in the pit area so i could take a few runs. Any punk kid could have just walked away with the stuff.
hope to be there on the 18th though
66 Buick Special May 4th, 07, 8:28 PM Hey Pete,
Did they enforce the age limit in the pits? I'm just wondering if my kids would be allowed in or if they would have to stay in the stands.
gilby246 May 4th, 07, 8:48 PM well i cant say for sure ...but now that you mention it, i dont recall seeing any kids in the pits.
i think the youngest i saw was about 14 or 15... but its tough to tell peoples ages these days
66 Buick Special May 4th, 07, 8:52 PM I kind of figured for liability they might not let them in the pits. I know they don't for Saturday races but I wasn't sure how informal this was.
Maybe I'll pack them a cooler and give them the camera. :)
Thanks for the info!
I just got home, I think I'm gonna shoot for the 18th, be a full weekend of being down there. Plus, the wife just took off for the weekend, I'm gonna give the kids some money, and I'll get left alone for the weekend.:hurray: Gonna install my Pro Stick, and try to bleed the brakelines again. Pedals still a bit squishy, I'm thinking maybe one more bleed to make sure there's no air left.
RAMBO May 4th, 07, 8:58 PM Glad you said SS and not ZZ :D

Hmmm... now that you mention it this might be my new paint inspiration...

NOT! :D :D :D
Have fun tonight!
Do me a favor and ask about the helmet rules for me- i don't have a helmet and will need to buy one if they are required instead of optional.
OHHH MAN!!!! I gotta go dug out my ZZ Top greatest hit's cd. That'll be a good one for in the garage tonite.
gotago May 5th, 07, 12:13 AM I'm out for tonight too. I may try the 18th but then again if I'm gonna try and make the Smokey Point show I don't know. It will probably be one or the other. If you go, have fun and don't break anything!
Just got home from SpiderMan, not too bad.
How were the drag's? I wanna hear about it.
FRYNTYR May 5th, 07, 5:48 AM I'M ON SECOND SHIFT FOR 6 MONTHS NOW BUT I WILL TAKE A FEW FRIDAYS OFF HERE AND THERE (stupid CAP lock was on, sorry) and make it out. Won't be for about a month.
Can't wait to here how everybody does. I'll let you all know when my local buddies will be out so you can meet them if you're there.
66 Buick Special May 5th, 07, 12:44 PM :D Well guys I made it up there and made 6 passes.
After 3 runs I had 1 rocker making a little noise. Having no tools I did the only sensible thing... I kept racing!
My first two practice runs were against latest generation Mustangs... both beat me badly...
It was then that I realized that I was spinning all the way through 1st. I dropped my air pressure in my BFG 265/50/15's to 20lbs. instead of 32lbs.
Then I raced a 5.0 Mustang and beat him twice by .3
Okay, feeling MUCH better! :D
Practice being over we bracketed up and I won a "buy" round and cut my best light of the night (.651) switching to the right lane.
Next round I'm up against a raggedy looking early '70's Pontiac Ventura SS.
My rocker seemed to be tapping a bit louder after the last round... no guts, no glory right?
He takes me off the line he cut a .767 to my .786
He has me by .339 at 60'
I start reeling him in but there not enough track...
He beats me by .109.
His time was identical to my fastest of the night.
Here is my best pass with the exception of fastest reaction time noted above.
2.446 - 60ft
9.186 - ET
I'm not sure how to read the trap mph.. they all say between 4.1 and 4.6
What does that mean? It sure felt faster than 4mph :p
I came to the realization that even with only a warm small block and 3.08 gears... a peg leg rear doesn't cut it at the drags :noway:
Also, I'm sure posi and tires like MT's or similar would make a huge difference.
Anyway.. I drive around to the stands and get my boys... rockers still making noise.. is it getting worse??? hmmm...
1 mile west of the fairgrounds she starts popping HARD through the carb... uh oh...:(
I nursed her to Snohomish and parked in a closed gas station... called my wife to request shuttle service... and get her VM... twice...
I'm sitting there pondering my situation when I decide to start pulling plug wires one at a time... on my 3rd try (I knew it was on the pass. side) she stops stackfiring...
I close the hood and she got us home! :hurray:
I have to work for half a day today but can't wait to rip into her... Even if its a valve and I get to pull the head.. I can't stop smiling!!!:D
It's been 15 yrs since running a drag at a track and I had a GREAT time!!!
Greg
gotago May 5th, 07, 2:13 PM Greg,
Hope its nothing serious (too expensive)!! My valve train sounds like a sewing maching no matter how many times I lash the valves.
Glad you had fun!
.I have to work for half a day today but can't wait to rip into her... Even if its a valve and I get to pull the head.. I can't stop smiling!!!:D Greg
OOHHH..... you got it bad now!:D You may as well just heat up that credit card now, Posi carrier.....extra set of rims..... some slicks to go with the rims............NOS cheater plate......it goes on and on and on:yes:
My 468 sounds like a shotgun motor, I can't adjust it out, I think it's got to do with the ramp speed being pretty radical. But I'll live with it.
FRYNTYR May 5th, 07, 3:23 PM Greg,
Pretty sure a rocker just came loose and the rocker finally got loose enough it seperated from the pushrod. Should be a exhaust rocker as it will cause it to pop back through the carb.
Any damage, give me a shout. I happen to know someone that can fix up a head in a snap.
Let us know what the outcome is.
My wife and I sat here and read your post and it cracked us up. You are hooked. Sure is fun huh!
kettbo May 5th, 07, 10:08 PM Greg,
I sure hope your engine is fine....
Think you'll find Darryl is correct....backed out ext rocker nut....
Another thing could be the pressed-in rocker stud coming up out of the head....look for one stud to be sticking up higher if none of the nuts looked backed out.... I'll feel bad if there is some problem with those heads you got from me....
Your 3.08 and no posi are at least as great a liability as my 2.56 gears with Posi!
I know I'll be hooked when I start taking the Elky to the track.....plan some SBC action this summer to get some tracktime in b4 the much-talked-about engine swap. I had wifey with me in the Elky heading South, some dude northbound gave us a big thumbs-up from his late 80s Camaro....
George
Out in a few to go play "swap the collector gasket." Old tired header flange coupled with low-slung Elky makes this a fairly common repair job.
gotago May 6th, 07, 2:02 AM OOHHH..... you got it bad now!:D You may as well just heat up that credit card now, Posi carrier.....extra set of rims..... some slicks to go with the rims............NOS cheater plate......it goes on and on and on:yes:
Funny you should mention that, I just got a Summit Speed Card:D
The wife knows about it too:(
66SSFan May 6th, 07, 2:21 AM This is sounding like too much fun. I need to knock the dust off the '66 and take it up there. I think it will do well, but I need a better stall converter. How was tech inspection? My battery is in the trunk and properly mounted with a shut off switch, drive shaft hoop and overflow catch can are in place. Need to replace the seleniod on the line lock though.
66 Buick Special May 6th, 07, 3:19 AM Well folks, Darryl was indeed correct.
I took off the pass side valve cover and there was my rocker just laying there.
George the stud was fine. No fault of the heads and even if it were you wouldn't hear a complaint from me. I have a tendency to adj my valves a tad on the loose side and I guess the all out passes found a flaw.
I stuck that rocker back on and re-adjusted the valves on that side (twice) and was off to Clearview. Called up Ben and stopped by his place for a BS session with him and a neighbor of his.
Stopped in at Taco Time on 164th to grab some grub and a guy started asking me about my Buick. Seems he has a early 70's vette with a 468 in the works. I told him about our site and he was very interested in the Monroe drags. Sounded like we will be seeing him around the cruises and maybe even this forum soon.
Thanks for the support guys!
BTW, Ben was telling me about an easy install tru-trac posi unit. Sounds like an easy install and very functional. Anyone ever installed one?
Greg
Cool, good to hear it was an easy fix.
Go ask Big Gear Head in the Tranny forum about the tru-trac.
Just thought of something, you got Poly-locks on that SB? I needed them on my old LT-1.
RAMBO May 6th, 07, 1:54 PM Greg- i looked up the info on the one i was considering and it was the Powertrax unit by Richmond.
Do a search in the drivelines forum and search for locker and you will get a lot of hits....
Thanks for stopping by!
flink69SS May 6th, 07, 2:22 PM Well all this talk about racing is killing me. I finally have my new tires on and now all I need is a little duct tape to hold my battery down and an old tequilla bottle for my over flow and I'm ready.
Greg- I'm also glad it wasn't anything major...
Let me figure out how to do a proper clutch slide and I'll be there with you...
66 Buick Special May 6th, 07, 4:19 PM Dave,
These are the rockers I'm running...
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/crn-11744-16.jpg
They have an allen head set screw that acts as a jam nut. Is there another style available? It seems like the allen heads are threaded pretty deep into the nut before they tighten up.
And Ben, Thanks for the clarification! I'll check into the Richmond set up, it sounded like an easy way to get more traction!
Frank, the last car I had with any power and a stick was my '67 390 Mustang w/4sp and Mcleod set up.... I think it went something like this...
Clutch in... 1st gear... 3000rpm... sidestep clutch... go up in smoke...
It wasn't the fastest way off the line but dammit it looked cool!
Hope that helps! :D
Greg,
The Crane Energizer's are good, that's what I'm running.
Once, many, many moons ago, actually about 20 years ago, I ran through all off my rockers. I had a pretty radical 355, Don't even know the compression, just started buying parts through PAW, that should date me right there.:D It ended up about 11.5:1, camel hump heads and a Comp cams 305.:D Had alotta fun with that motor, anyway, I forgot to set all of the poly-locks.:o Needless to say the motor stopped motoring about 10 miles down the road. All hell broke loose, and I ended up redoing them on the side of the road with the girl I was trying to impress sitting in the car the whole time. Wasted three month's working up the nerve to ask her out, then we didn't make the movie to meet all of her friends, and I was S.O.L. I learned to make double sure that I got all the set screws tight from then on.
Hopefully you won't have that problem again, wierd S--t happens when you're flogging on the RODENTS.
gotago May 6th, 07, 6:31 PM OK, I gotta ask, what happened with the girl??????????????
FRYNTYR May 6th, 07, 6:42 PM OK, I gotta ask, what happened with the girl??????????????
I think what i read into this was that there ended up being 17 set-SCREWS, not 16, that didn't get tightened.....................LOL!
OK, I gotta ask, what happened with the girl??????????????
I think I proved Myself to be too much of a Gear head. She was from the upper side of the tracks kinda deal, and I was just trying to "hone her Bore once"..........Iff'n ya know what I mean.:D I really don't think her Daddy woulda liked mee too much.
Boy, I sure miss that Motor.:)

gotago May 6th, 07, 7:32 PM Yeah the FORD TRACTOR BLUE oil pan really sets it off;) Maybe that's the color Ben is painting the Elky?
I was curious about the girl story as I had something similiar happen many years ago but it was a Buick and it overheated and I spent a good bit of the evening finding a creek and toting water. We've been married 20 years in June. Shouda kept the Buick...............................
66 Buick Special May 9th, 07, 1:12 AM I've been communicating with BGH regarding the purchase and install of a Powertrax unit only to find that... they don't make one for the '66 BOP 8.2 rear end.
So my options are:
Buy an Eaton posi unit, BGH swears he can walk me through the install process...
Or, option two might be to look for a complete Chev rear and swap it in. I'm pretty sure it will bolt right in.
Due to cash flow issues it will be a couple of months before I can do either, but I am now in pursuit of traction!
I must be tired... I just thought of option #3... I could just install one really wide slick on the passenger side...:p
I'll do all I can to help you out, I'm completly set up to do differentials here. BGH, has helped me do several. One option to look at is to buy your stuff through BGH, and pick it up at Randy's in Everrett. Let me know, it's not that hard to do, alittle daunting to the first timer, but not that bad with the right tools.
FRYNTYR May 9th, 07, 5:25 AM Have a used set of 275/60/15 BFG drag radials that have very little tread left but would be a heck of a lot better than regular street tires. Should be able to get a couple of nights of racing out of them.
You're welcome to have them if you want/.
66 Buick Special May 9th, 07, 8:19 AM Thanks Darryl!
I'd love to give those a try. I currently have slight clearance issues with 275/60-15's at least with my AR outlaws. I either need to find a pr of wheels with a 1/2" more backspace or pick up a set of airbags I keep procrastinating about. I've replaced my rear springs with a new factory spec set and standard monroe gas shocks, but as Ben can attest the rear is still a bit soft on my car.
Actually the more I think about it, they might be fine at the track.. my sidewall cutting issues came mostly with my kids in the car (270lbs combined weight) and hitting bumps.
Where are you located?
Greg
66 Buick Special May 9th, 07, 8:24 AM Dave, thanks for the info!
BGH said he used Randy's for years for parts but didn't mention I could just go pick them up there. He did mention he's in the process of switching vendors, so that may be why he didn't say something. He said this new vendor will be a bit cheaper.
When the time comes for the install I'll be looking you up.
Greg
FRYNTYR May 9th, 07, 1:33 PM Greg, I live in Arlington. There are no drags this week so you could grab them this weekeend if you're close. I'm also in Everett everyday during the week but on second shift now so nobody is home when I'm free.
You can buy parts and pick them up at the Randy's will-call. Give the tech Line a call at Randy's. Ask for Terry. You should get my brother. He should be able to give you the lowdown and what parts are available for the BOP rear and some pricing.
66 Buick Special May 9th, 07, 8:28 PM Darryl, PM sent.
Thanks again!
Greg

I ordered some axle's through him, picked them up in Everrett, was cheaper then me going thru Randy's.
Still need to get Ben up here to install his Grand Cherokee box.
