I just got a paper saying the Post Office is increasing the price on everything. It looks to be 2 cents on the stamps and about %10 increase on everything else.

They also are offering the "forever stamp" $0.41 and not subject to price increases. The roll you buy today will be good until they run out

That said, it's still pretty cheap to get a letter delivered anyplace in the country

We can thank OPEC and the oil companies for part of that. I just got a Fedex bill, and it has a hefty "fuel surcharge" on it now that fuel prices are climbing. Getting anything transported is going to cost more.
Also, this morning, I had my local lumber yard deliver some materials for my garage. Two years ago, they charged me $30 per load. This year, it is $45. That is a 50% increase, and that one can be blamed on increased fuel prices too.

people crack me up. When they complain about how much a letter cost to mail. Just think about it this way. You live in New York. You want to mail a letter to Calif. You give me your letter. I take it. and get to calif in two or three days. For 40 cents. How is that possiable? How cheap is that. Could you do it for that price? I don't think so!! Just a thought!!

Rick not to start an argument or flame, but the last two times I've priority mailed items from Missouri to New Jersey it took one 7 days and the other 10 days. The second was for my parents 50th. I didn't want to hassle with the airline(July 02, post 9-11)so I sent it a week ahead of my flight. I got home before it ever got there. When I inquired why I was told basically, who knows, and got the impression who cares. When I asked about 2 day guarantee, I was told that's not a guarantee they try to get it there in two days. Then why the he** did I pay extra? It typically takes 5 days minimum, usually 7, for my family to receive snail mail from me. Again this mail is going from Missouri to New Jersey so I don't think the post office is quite as efficent as you believe. Whenever my family sends snail mail to me it takes 4-5 days. Pete

We rarely ever mail letters anymore. We pay all the bills on line and have cell phones.

AND THATS WHY NO ONE MAILS ANYTHING ANYMORE...
the price wouldn't keep going up if they'd walk their route ,no the stop start in that little jeeps/trucks...
think if the fuel savings,
next cops and there cruisers...
they need to start walking there beat..
and loose that body by donut ... :)

i don't have a calendar handy, but i believe that was PRE 9/11 by a couple of months..
sorry, had to point that out..

as for why they keep increasing the prices- it's partly because email and instant messaging are cutting into their business so much. it used to be that people sat down with a pen and paper to write letters to others. now, people just sit at their computer, type whatever they want to send, and off it goes with the push of a button. letters used to be the bread and butter of the USPS business plan- now it is but a small part of what they do.
when was the last time anyone here sent a letter to someone just to say "hello"?
that, coupled with increased fuel prices and healthcare costs is driving rates up. they might be on the government health plan, but i think the USPS is totally on their own from the government with no government $$$ used to keep them going.

The stamp isn't the problem, I do A lot of ebaying and the shipping prices had a Big Jump. Tho I don't pay to ship something the buyer will look at it and think I'm over charging.
I sent front bumper brackets for(7lbs) $19.12, but I sent a whole radiator for (35lbs)$23.42. When the price goes in affect It will hurt the medium sized stuff.
