There have been modifications to my dads 70 El Camino 454 over the last bit before he died, and I think it needs a good run through tune up before i sell it (to fund the resto of one of his other cars). I understand the basics and i have the tools, but there are a few questions would like to ask.
It got an HEI dist a few years ago, but I dont think the timing has ever been set right. I had someone look at it a while ago and found out the vacum advance was hooked into the wrong port and that the initial timeing was set retarded (meaning 8 deg retarded). on a stock 454 what should the total timing number be set at? If theres no actual number, what is an average? I have the keys for the dist to set the dist time, I just dont know what number to shoot for.
At the same time the guy worked on my timing he adjusted the carb, but then i straitened a slightly kinked fuel line and installed some headers. now it is running very rich. It has a 750 quadrajet that works well, i just dont have experience with carbs. Is there a baseline sequence to set the carb up right? I dont like the idea of eyeballing it, since i dont have much experience to run off of.
Any help would be appreciated.
