Hi. I have a solid silver wire in a brown/white stripe color that comes out loose by the brake lite switch.
Is it for an amp meter or ?
Thanks

Brown with white stripe
Just a guess but it probably goes to the turn signal switch.
Is there a white wire on the stop light switch?

Maybe someone else will no more.

It's a resistor wire, it runs from the ignition switch to the stock voltage regulator. It is parallel with the GEN light if you have one. If you have the stock alternator/regulator, it will not charge without this wire connected. If you have an SI alternator, it will charge without that wire connected.

Note: It's resistor wire from the ignition switch to the bulkhead. from there to the regulator is standard 16 ga copper wire.

Elree- Do you have a schematic I can look at and also, what is the reason for this resistor wire?
I have removed the other resistor wires many times from bulkhead to coil+ to get a 12V feed. I have never noticed this one for the gen lite before.
Thanks.

Like Elree said the resister wire runs from the bulkhead connector where it connects along with the solid brown from the idiot light.

To the ignition switch where it connects along with the brown wire to the fuse block.

I think it's purpose is to provide a path in the event that the bulb burns out.
Right Elree?

That's right Dean.

The stock regulator needs voltage applied to terminal #4 of the regulator. This is used for the initial field flashing. On GMs with this regulator/alternator setup there are two paths for the terminal #4 connection. One is through the GEN light the other is the resistor wire. Cars with the gauge option have the resistor wire only.

There are two paths so that if the GEN bulb burns out the alternator system will still work. Because the resistance of the GEN light path is much less than that of the resistor wire most of the current will flow through it.

Thanks Guys!
Its a good day when you learn something new and this is a great way to tell if a guage package has been added on .
