Harold,

First glad to see you're out and about on team chevelle again and hopefully getting over the flu. Can you help me out on a solid lifter cam suggestion? I'm putting together a 396 for a '69 camaro and would like to get suggestions on a cam. It's pretty much a stock L78 config but with L89 842 aluminum heads. May switch back to 840s in the future.

Here's the specifics:
- 396 +.061 (4.155 bore)
- "842" '69 L-89 Aluminum heads - Rect Port, 2.19 intake valves, 1.84 exhaust valves
- "163" Factory Aluminum Dual Plane Intake
- 780 Factory 4346 Holley
- 10.95 to 1 Speed-pro forged pistons (L2328F30)
- Stock manifolds to Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust via mandrel bent 2 1/2" pipes
- 4 speed
- 3.73 posi
- Power brakes
- RS vacuum headlights
- Mostly street usage
- 91 octane readily available, 92 available at Amoco

I'm trying to keep the car looking as "factory" as possible under the hood and would like it to run on pump gas. I'm concerned on the vacuum side to run the power brakes and RS headlights. I would like to "upgrade" from the original L78 cam though. Any thoughts on this combination or suggestions on a solid lifter cam?

I generally use the 272F12 to replace the LS6 cam. It is 238 at .050, and .550 valve lift. Because it is so much shorter at .020 than the LS6 cam, it has decent vacuum. The power/torque is much better than the LS6.

Harold, What are the specs for the cam (i.e. intake closing*, lift, etc)? Is it the 402a2LUN? When I do the calcs for dynamic compression, to hit around 8.0 it looks like I need a cam with the intake closing at approximately 75*.

I have a question too, is that a Lunati # or an Ultradyne #, and are the old Ultradyne cams still available ? It seems that the old Ultradyne web site is gone, so how would one find the specs for the Ultradyne cams ?

Go to www.holley.com (http://www.holley.com) and go under Lunati Cams and they are listed in their online catalog. They will have a U in front of the part# http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/IEC/IECC/IECC.html http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/IEC/IECC/Chevy7.html
