: Noise from Oil Pump???

I replaced my oil pump (standard pump), oil pickup (Moroso), and oil pan (Moroso). I have a SBC 350, and is currently on an engine stand. I added 5 quarts of Royal Purple 5W-30 synthetic. I spun up the oil pump with an old distributor with out a cam gear on it. It makes a growling noise that you can feel on the bottom of the pan. I have about a half inch of clearance from the pickup to the pan. Nothing else seems to be touching. I had a friend listen to it who has lots of experience building engines. He seemed perplexed, but said he would put it in the car and run it and doen't think I'll have any problems. I'm still concerned. I don't want to hear the noise when the engine is running. Anyone have idea or an opinion on this.....

70,
If it makes noise on the stand, it sure will make it when its in the car  Now is the time to pull the pan and pump and find out what the problem is. Sounds like a burr on one of the gears or something similar. Did it possibly get too hot while welding the pickup tube in place ? Did you try turning the pump at all before you installed it ? I always get some oil in them and slowly turn them by hand to see how they feel. Most of the time I end up taking them apart just to make sure they "look" ok inside.

When you turn the pump with a long screwdriver it feels a little jerky. But when I put oil in the old pump and turned it, it felt the same. The old pump was fine, I replaced it because the engine was out and pumps are cheap. The pick up isn't welded. The Moroso pickup bolts to the pump cover bolts. I guess I should try the old pump again to see if it makes the same noise. I think the new pump is a Meling??

70,
I would take it out and find out why it is making the noise. If it comes apart and ruins your engine, you will wish you had taken the time while it was on the stand and easy to do.

By the way, you really should weld the pickup. I have seen more of the bolted on screens break than you want to know. The instructions that came with the pump and screen should specify that it has to be welded, at least every Moroso pump or screen I have seen says so.

Thanks again Bill. I appreciate the reply. I will pull it out and check it.

I can tell you exactly what it is. I just went thru this last week. The pump body is hitting the side of the pan. I had to pull mine back off ( my fault anyway because I already knew better) and clearance the pan. Its not hitting the bottom of the pan but it is hitting the side of the pan. When you look into the pan where the sump area is, you will see where it looks like a stock pan had the bottom cut out and the larger sump was installed. It hits in the stock pan area. You have seen post about the new melling pumps breaking, well this is probably why, when you lay the pan down on the motor, you will have to move the pan a little forward to get the bolts in, well thats why, and when your doing that you are pushing the side of the pan against the pump body giving it a side force that it was not designed for. I took mine back off when I heard the air raid siren sound the pump was making . If you lay the pan on it without a gasket, you can move it around and feel it up against something. Keep pressure against it and raise the pan up and it will leave a little scratch mark inside the pan on the side just above where the sump is cut out. I cut a t slot in mine with a cut off tool and bent it in and it made a huge difference, bolts went right in then. Remember this is inside the pan in the factory pan area and the slot has noting to do with the new larger sump area added by moroso. O BTW a HV pump hits a stock pan also. Put it back together and no noise.:hurray:
