jwecam67 May 2nd, 07, 9:30 PM :hurray: I HAVE A 4 SPEED MUNCIE BOLTED TO A SBC USING A TRUCK BELLHOUSING 460486. I INSTALLED A ADAPTER RING AND DIALED IN THE BELLHOUSING. I HAVE A TURNING WHINNING NOISE WHEN I PUT TRANSMISSION IN NUETRAL AND LET OUT THE CLUTCH. IS THIS NORMAL OR CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF THERES A PROBLEM ? ...jwecam67
72SSKamino May 3rd, 07, 1:39 AM Did you use a pilot bearing or bushing? what are you running for a clutch?centerforce etc...?
DZAUTO May 3rd, 07, 7:55 AM Some, but by no means do all, manual trannys make noise when running in neutral. That just seems to be the nature of the manual tranny species. It could indicate a problem or maybe its just your particular tranny. For example, the cluster gear and the reverse idler gears are spinning ALLLLLLLLLL the time. If the bushing that's inside the reverse idler gear has some wear, or if the reverse idler shaft has some wear, that may contribute to some noise. Also, if there is wear in the bearing surface inside the cluster gear, or if some of the needle bearings in the cluster gear are worn or have minute pits in them, that may cause some noise. Also, maybe the thrust washers are excessively worn, or, maybe someone who rebuilt it in the past left out a thrust washer. Or maybe the tang on a thrust washer broke off and the thrust washer is turning and chewing up the case from inside. Or maybe one of the gears spinning on the main shaft has become damage from metal particles and is galling the main shaft.
There is ABSOLUTELY ZERO way to determine exactly what is causing the noise short of a complete tear down. If the noise is constant in neutral, it may not be something bad. If it is a clicking or rattling noise, that is likely not good. A chipped or broken tooth will result in a clicking noise and will eventually result in some kind of serious failure.

Is a "pilot bearing" the same as a "throwout bearing"?----I have heard his
symptoms from a bad throwout bearing. Pete
tedixon May 3rd, 07, 11:48 AM The pilot bushing is not the same as the throw out bearing. The pilot bushing fits in a hole bored in the end of the crank shaft. Its purpose is to keep the input shaft straight. The throw out bearing slides on the front bearing retainer. Its purpose is to release the clutch. The throw out bearing can make noise if there is no air gap between it and the pressure plate fingers.
My M20 makes some noise in neutral. It was recently professionally rebuilt. At first, I was worried about it. The transmission works fine. So, I stopped worrying about it. The transmission also whines a little in 1-2-3 because those gears are new, while the other gears in the transmission are not. That's nothing to worry about either.
dennymac May 3rd, 07, 1:10 PM Did you use a verified GOOD throwout bearing? If the bearing is damaged in any way it will 'sing' when spun. Once again, best of luck. DennyMac
pdq67 May 3rd, 07, 8:07 PM James,
All stick tranny's whine to some extent!! It's the nature of the beasts, imho..
Some louder than others even after going through.
Did you install a new crank flange pilot bushing or roller bearing?
And a new throw-out bearing too??
The cheapest thing you can do is to replace BOTH when it is torn down w/ new ones!! Same way w/ a clutch disc... It's a real hassle to R&R a tranny so why not spend a bit more and do it right the FIRST TIME!!
Ask Travis how I know over at Team Camaro!!!!
Been there, done it....

I was refering to the roller bearing some people use instead of the bushing in the end of the crank shaft.
jwecam67 May 4th, 07, 2:47 PM I Installed A Roller Bearing Pilot Bushing And A New T/o Bearing. I Also Just Had The Transmission Rebuilt.
jwecam67 May 4th, 07, 2:52 PM I Did Install A New T/o Bearing And Roller Bearing Pilot Bushing.the Tranny Was Just Rebuilt But The Noise Was There Before And After The Rebuild So Maybe There's Nothing To Worry About.
jwecam67 May 4th, 07, 2:55 PM BOUGHT ONE AT THE LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE SAID MADE IN u.s.a.
cost 32.00 dollars
jwecam67 May 4th, 07, 2:57 PM installed roller bearing and the clutch is Borg and Beck
pdq67 May 5th, 07, 3:13 PM I figure you are fine..
